Gritty, dark, adult, and an essential reboot of a downtrodden franchise. The Dark Knight Returns explores a great schism between what Supermanstands for vs. what Batman stands for. The depiction of President Reagan alone is worth a read. Without Frank Miller's Batman, we would probably have never gotten the type of stuff Chris Nolan is able to produce these days. There is a nice little essay by Alan Moore in this edition as well. ( ) This is a compilation of all the Frank Miller Batman stories: "Batman - Year One" (not illustrated by Miller), "Wanted: Santa Claus Dead or Alive" (not written by Miller), and the coupe de grace, "The Dark Knight Returns". The first story is a compilation of several comic books, retelling the origin of Batman and his first year, with a few twists from the well-known beginnings. It is an exceptional piece of work, and David Mazzucchelli's artwork is nearly the equal of Frank Miller's. The second is an early bit of Christmas fluff, decent but of no real importance. And finally, there is "The Dark Knight Returns", maybe the finest piece of comic storytelling ever created. A deserved tribute to a great creator and one of his most suited subjects, the Batman. This was my introduction to Frank Miller about sixteen years ago. Since then Mr. Miller has put out the outstanding Sin City series, but his Batman stories are the ones that stand out in my heart. Whether diving into the origins of the Dark Knight or going to the opposite end of the spectrum, Bruce Wayne in retirement, Miller has his fingers on the pulse of American society, and the prognosis is not good. "Batman: Year One" is the first story in the collection (actually the last one of the three written) and it is a story that many Batman fans had hoped the fisrt Batman movie would have been based on. It is well told, and the major players in the Batman saga are introduced: Batman, Gordon, Alfed and Selina Kyle (Catwomen). Wanted: Santa Claus-Dead or Alive." "The Dark Knight Returns." This four chapter story is spectacular and a great piece of work: both in story telling and various artist expression. This psychological drama deals with an aging Batman, who at the age of 55, comes back to fight crime after a ten year absence. Miller insightfully deals with many subjects now addressed by our popular media. For example, the idea of a liberal society blaming crime on the agents of heroism instead on personal evil. Miller writes and demonstrates that victims are innocent people who try to live a virtous life, and Batman fights to protect a city dying of a cancer.
