Apart from that units such as these can be seen as the predecessors of the volunteer regiments that were raised for service during the late unpleasantness of the 1860s. Actually, where Winders is at his best is at examining the internal politics and stresses of the two regiments, as it just brings home how loosely woven together American society was in the period in question.
