"In the segregated US of the mid-twentieth century, African-American travelers could have a hard time finding towns where they were legally allowed to stay at night and hotels, restaurants, and service stations willing to serve them. In 1936, Victor Hugo Green published the first annual volume of The Negro Motorist Green-Book, later renamed The Negro Travelers' Green Book. This facsimile of the 1940 edition brings you all the listings, articles, and advertisements aimed at the Black travelers trying to find their way across a country where they were so rarely welcome." -- Publisher's description Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

"We earnestly believe "The Negro Motorist Green Book" will mean as much if not more to us as the A.A.A. means to the white race."
Horrible. Bravo to Mr. Victor H. Green for creating a guide to help people in such a hate-filled time. Boo to the short amount of listings in this guide. Only 48 pages in total, only 2 columns in my home state of California.
This isn't really a book to read, per se, as it is a listing of places to stay and eat. It is a book to think about, reflect on, and remember the ugly truth in U.S. history. As true in 1940 as it is today. Thank you Mr. Green! ( )
