I got through this book because I have a general policy of not giving up halfway through. The story has great promise and could be very intriguing. However, somehow I could not stick with reading more than a couple of pages at a time because I immediately got bored. There are sudden jumps in time, the characters lack emotional depth and thought and the constant POV-switching would be ok if it led to more depth in character - instead it’s just annoying. Very disappointing, because with better writing it could be fantastic. ( ) Where to begin with this book. Have been searching these past few months for a fantasy book to sweep me up and take me away. I didn't think I would find one, and then here comes this book recommended by a top list for 2020 and BOY WHERE THEY RIGHT. This hits every fantasy note I've been longing for, reminding me of beloved fantasy books I have loved in the past with entirely new twists and original plots. The world building is just the right amount. The grittiness balanced, the story keeps reeling me in. And the villains. OH I hate them (So good). Anyway, if you've been trying to find a good Fantasy book while exiling yourself for the good of the realm during the plague, GET THIS BOOK. AND THEN ALL OF THEM. ALL THE BOOOOKS. Great new author and story The start of an epic fantasy that has mystery, action and magic. Most of the themes will be familiar to epic fantasy readers. The world building is very good, the characters are fully fleshed, if a little cookie cutter epic fantasy tropes. Overall a solid and enjoyable story. Ratings:- A pretty straightforward by-the-numbers fantasy story. Not bad by any means, it hit all the usual notes (some might say "tropes") of an epic fantasy novel and a lot of the times, that's all you need. Not the best fantasy book I ever read, but far from the worst. Very middle-of-the road and would very likely scratch that fantasy itch provided you know up front what you are getting. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

"Long ago the world fell into twilight, when the great empires of old consumed each other in sorcerous cataclysms. In the south the Star Towers fell, swallowed by the sea, while the black glaciers descended upon the northern holdfasts, entombing the cities of Min-Ceruth in ice and sorcery. Then from the ancient empire of Menekar the paladins of Ama came, putting every surviving sorcerer to the sword and cleansing their taint from the land for the radiant glory of their lord. The pulse of magic slowed, fading like the heartbeat of a dying man. But after a thousand years it has begun to quicken again. In a small fishing village a boy with strange powers comes of age. . . A young queen rises in the west, fanning the long-smoldering embers of magic into a blaze once more. . .Something of great importance is stolen--or freed--from the mysterious Empire of Swords and Flowers. . .And the immortals who survived the ancient cataclysms bestir themselves, casting about for why the world is suddenly changing."--Back cover Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
