Medical student Seth Levine faces escalating stress and gallows humor as he struggles with the collapse of his romantic relationships and all preconceived notions of what it means to be a doctor. It doesn't take long before he realizes not getting frazzled is the least of his problems. Seth encounters a student so arrogant he boasts that he'll eat any cadaver part he can't name, an instructor so dedicated she tests the student's ability to perform a gynecological exam on herself and a woman so captivating that Seth will do whatever it takes to make her laugh, including regale her with a story about a diagnostic squabble over an erection.… (plus d'informations)

A fictional account of med school student Seth Levine that follows his hilarious journey as he trains to be a doctor.

An interesting tale that leaps between hospital anecdotes and Seth's love life that is written in a witty style that entertains and educates in equal measure. It reminds me of the Richard Gordon novels about Simon Sparrow that were made into various films and TV series years ago. ( )

friendship, contemporary, NYC, college, situational-humor, verbal-humor

The memorization, the hours, the social life, the fellow students, the obsessions with pseudo diagnosis, and all the bad jokes and pranks. Medical School whether in NYC or anywhere is a trial by fire survivable only with humor. As a retired RN it is almost a given that I would enjoy this light hearted fiction about the transformation this student goes through while suffering relationship angst. I loved it!
I won the audiobook in a giveaway! David Gilmore is the voice actor who gave even more life to the fun. ( )

I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review, and I am so glad that I was. It is the fictional story of a medical student using the factual accounts of what med students actually do encounter on their experience to becoming a full-fledged doctor. It's a juggling act, learning to handle all the responsibilities of being a doctor, along with handling the trials of life. At times it's hilarious, at other times it is touching and sweet, and still other times it's heart-breaking. But I really enjoyed it. I recommend it to the reading community and want to read more of Hirsch. ( )

Hirsch pulls together dark humor with gross anatomy and comes up with one novel book. He’s quick witted, lovelorn and the doctor for me. He somehow keeps his humanity in an environment where medicine is God and patients are often a nuisance and who wouldn’t feel that way going through such grueling training year after year. I found his work delightful, disgusting, depressing, and dreamy. How he manages to run all those feelings together without running the story aground is his true talent.

This book was honestly reviewed based on a free preview. ( )

Sometimes we called one another by our future doctor names. We did it partly to be funny, but mostly because we liked it when people did it back to us.
