I hated the title. ( ) Didn't read this asshole's book (sorry, I don't normally attack authors, but I don't count this guy as a legitimate author). But he comes on to my review of [b:Skidding Into Oblivion|41566469|Skidding Into Oblivion|Brian Hodge|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1535593985l/41566469._SX50_.jpg|64865895], and pushes his novel. Fuck you, Michael Hughes. You're a lowlife piece of shit and I wouldn't read your crap if you paid me to. Michael Hughes recently liked a book I reviewed and replied that I would like his book, PUMPKIN FARMER and included a link. I was able to get a free copy of the book from Amazon. His writing started out all right but then the story, while descriptive, became boring and the lead character, Horace, was shown to be a sociopath. The story was going to get sick. Before I read any further, I looked at reviews. Several Goodreads reviewers said he did the same thing to them. I do not appreciate him using my reviews to solicit readers for his books especially when there is no relationship between them. That type of activity should be banned. This author has been spamming reviewers on Goodreads in order to get sales/reviews. I try to support new authors and review at least 15 self-published books a year just to see what's out there. This book reads like a first draft. There is a seed of a workable idea in there, but the plot is uneven, characters two-dimensional and the descriptions of place are inadequate (I know San Fran fairly well and had had problems placing myself in the scene in many sections). The style of writing is amateurish, with almost teenage conversational English punctuated by florid expression (often in the same sentence). All I can say is that it is mercifully short. The author would have been better placed directing his efforts to developing his writing rather than flogging a poor product. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
The year is 1979. Malaise, stagflation, turmoil in the Middle East, and a gas crunch; these things are but background noise for what unfolds when a lovesick businessman and a sociopathic drifter cross paths. John Nix, business manager of a Silicon Valley semiconductor startup, picks up Horace Fullworth, a ne'er-do -well heir of a wealthy California family, who has returned to San Francisco after surviving the Jonestown Massacre. After John discovers his girlfriend cheating, he drives to a bar in the small rustic town of La Honda. He meets Ellie O'Neil, a pretty young woman he offers to drive home. Feeling misled by her, he leaves her on the side of the road, where Horace finds her. John hears that Ellie has gone missing and is overcome with guilt. His struggle with his conscience leads him back to those rugged coastal foothills of the San Francisco Peninsula. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
