"In this riveting new novel by the New York Times bestselling author of the Chet and Bernie mystery series, a deeply damaged female soldier home from the war in Afghanistan becomes obsessed with finding a missing girl, gains an unlikely ally in a stray dog, and encounters new perils beyond the combat zone. LeAnne Hogan went to Afghanistan as a rising star in the military, and came back a much lesser person, mentally and physically. Now missing an eye and with half her face badly scarred, she can barely remember the disastrous desert operation that almost killed her. She is confused, angry, and suspects the fault is hers, even though nobody will come out and say it. Shattered by one last blow--the sudden death of her hospital roommate, Marci--LeAnne finds herself on a fateful drive across the country, reflecting on her past and seeing no future. Her native land is now unfamiliar, recast in shadow by her one good eye, her damaged psyche, her weakened body. Arriving in the rain-soaked small town in Washington State that Marci had called home, she makes a troubling discovery: Marci's eight-year-old daughter has vanished. When a stray dog--a powerful, dark, unreadable creature, no one's idea of a pet--seems to adopt LeAnne, a surprising connection is formed and something shifts inside her. As she becomes obsessed with finding Marci's daughter, LeAnne and her inscrutable canine companion are drawn into danger as dark and menacing as her last Afghan mission. This time she has a strange but loyal fellow traveler protecting her blind side. Enthralling, suspenseful, and psychologically nuanced, The Right Side introduces one of the most unforgettable protagonists in modern fiction: isolated, broken, disillusioned--yet still seeking redemption and purpose--LeAnne takes hold of the reader and never lets go"--… (plus d'informations)

The Right Side is an engrossing book about LeAnne Hogan, who has just returned from Afghanistan after being wounded. At the hospital where she is staying as she tries to come to terms with what happens does she get to know Marci, who has lost a leg. They become friends and bond over their military life. Then, Marci suddenly dies and LeAnne after leaving the hospital decides to drive to see Marci's daughter. But, she learns when she arrives that Marci's daughter has disappeared, did she run away or has anyone taken her?

Writing this short outline of the book is truly like giving away very little of what is going on in this book. I mean it takes over half the book before she even is close to seeing Marci's daughter and getting acquainted with a very special dog. But, that's also the thing I really like about the book, it seems like a straightforward story, but there is so much going one in LeAnne's life, both what happened in the past when she was growing up, her life in the military and what happened when she was wounded. And, then we have the presents events with her trouble remembering things, and her road-trip to see Marci's daughter and not to mention the dog that suddenly appears in her life.

It's such a rich story, and I came to like LeAnne quite a lot and of course dog too (yes she gets a name, but you have to read it to find out since it's part of the story) and I wouldn't mind reading more books with them. I mean they are a fabulous team and I really want to know what will happen next!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! ( )

LeAnn Hogan returned from Afghanistan severely damaged - missing her right eye, her right leg, horribly scarred on the right side of her face and with a case of PTSD amplified as a commando who had lost her half of her situational awareness/early warning array along with the peripheral vision of that right eye.

She's angry, prone to unpredictable, inappropriate acts of violence and totally alone in the world.

Along the way, she picks up the mission to find her dead comrade in arms' kidnapped daughter and an equally abused Rottweiller. The dog instinctively protects her right side while LeAnn is trying desperately to figure out who's on the right side of the case she is investigating.

The book comes to a satisfying conclusion without making any feel good compromises to get there. Despite her gritty attitude and unwilingness to let down her guard or open up to anyone, LeAnn is a character you can't help caring about. It says a lot about how much I liked the book and LeAnn to hope that this is the first in a series about her.

Very good narrator who captured LeAnn's inner monologs in a plausible way. ( )

Spencer Quinn (pseudonym for Peter Abrahams) is better known for his Chet and Bernie mystery series of books featuring a canine narrator and private investigator.

In The Right Side, Quinn has created a stand alone novel about LeAnne Hogan, an Afghanistan war veteran coming to terms with life after the Army. LeAnne suffers from PTSD and physical ailments as a direct result of her service in Afghanistan, including the loss of an eye and permanent scars on her face.

Recuperating and receiving psychiatric treatment in Walter Reed Military Medical Centre, I found it hard to genuinely warm to LeAnne. Written in the third person, she's abrasive, full of anger and confusion and comes off as abrupt and uncaring. I did enjoy the bond she formed with her roommate Marci though and wanted this to continue longer that it did.

After losing Marci, LeAnne recklessly abandons her treatment and goes rogue as a mystery begins to take over the plot. I found the constant jumps in the timeline a little confusing and some of the elements of her emotional state seemed unrealistic to me but fine for the general reading audience.

Dog lovers will enjoy the appearance of a dog later in the novel and while I'm not a dog person, I couldn't help but enjoy their interactions. LeAnne and the dog have a special connection and bond that was evident on the page and made me laugh out loud several times.

The Right Side by Spencer Quinn contains themes of duty, honour, sacrifice, survivor's guilt, anger, betrayal, recovery, healing and love. I just wanted more.
