History of constitutionalism from ancient Athens to some of its present incarnations - the American and British systems. Ancient Athenian and Roman republican constitutions were designed, in theory, to limit and counter against absolute/imperial state power.
Later develops 'countervailance theory' elaborating on this. Early modern examples of flawed but constitutional states were Venice, the Dutch Republic, Stuart England, and the American revolution, ending with that and the modern British system.
For my purposes, this was a concise and well-written comparison of historical constitutions. Got the job done. ( )
