Fantasy. Fiction. Literature. Thriller. HTML:

Filled with political intrigue, violent magic, and malevolent spirits, the mesmerizing second book in Sarah Beth Durst's Queens of Renthia epic fantasy trilogy.

Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .

And those spirits want to kill you.

It's the first lesson that every Renthian learns.

Not long ago, Daleina used her strength and skill to survive those spirits and assume the royal throne. Since then, the new queen has kept the peace and protected the humans of her land. But now for all her power, she is hiding a terrible secret: she is dying. And if she leaves the world before a new heir is ready, the spirits that inhabit her beloved realm will run wild, destroying her cities and slaughtering her people.

Naelin is one such person, and she couldn't be further removed from the Queen??and she wouldn't have it any other way. Her world is her two children, her husband, and the remote village tucked deep in the forest that is her home, and that's all she needs. But when Ven, the Queens champion, passes through the village, Naelin's ambitious husband proudly tells him of his wife's ability to control spirits??magic that Naelin fervently denies. She knows that if the truth of her abilities is known, it will bring only death and separation from those she loves.

But Ven has a single task: to find the best possible candidate to protect the people of Aratay. He did it once when he discovered Daleina, and he's certain he's done it again. Yet for all his appeals to duty, Naelin is a mother, and she knows her duty is to her children first and foremost. Only as the Queen's power begins to wane and the spirits become emboldened??even as ominous rumors trickle down from the north??does she realize that the best way to keep her son and daughter safe is to risk everything.

Sarah Beth Durst established a place of dark wonder in The Queen of Blood, and now the stakes are even higher as the threat to the Queen and her people grows both from within and beyond the borders of Aratay in this riveting second novel of the Queens of Renthia… (plus d'informations)

We got a bit til this comes out so I'll just say these things:
- what's more important, protecting your family with your power or protecting the world so they are safe?
- what price do family ties take?
- Is there a moral right when both sides are struggling equally?
- there is always a third option. the world is not black and white, the world is not made of such simplistic categories. Always find the third option that works best for you. ( )

4.5 stars!

I am really enjoying my stay in the magical and dangerous world of Renthia.

In The Reluctant Queen, the plot takes a dramatic turn right from the start — young Queen Daleina is dying, diagnosed with a rare, incurable disease which makes her loose control of the spirits, endangering the people she’s supposed to protect. No one knows about this, however, except the Queen’s closest friends, and the chosen few tasked with finding an heir — a woman who has the affinity and could be trained to take Daleina’s place — as soon as possible.

Champion Ven again proves that he knows his business, tracking down a perfect candidate. There’s only one problem: she’s not a teenage girl ready to upend her whole life on a whim — Naelin's a mother, completely devoted to her two precocious kids. I loved her character so much! She was a real mama bear.

Daleina’s mysterious illness is not the only problem that Aratay’s about to face, however — Merecot, once Daleina’s classmate and friend, now the queen of the neighboring country — is moving her troops across the border…

This sequel didn’t disappoint! I’d even say I liked some parts of it better than the first book, especially the new characters, which were multi-dimensional and really well-crafted — Naelin and her kids definitely took the cake, but Garnah (Hamon’s sociopathic poisoner mom) was also a great addition. The action was just as fast paced as in the prequel, and there was more intrigue, too — I was really surprised by the “bad guy”’s true identity!

I liked the part of the epilogue told from Merecot’s POV, I hope it’ll continue in the next book. I’d love to learn more about the country of Semo, their situation seems very difficult and I’m curious to see how it will develop.

I really don’t know why this series got stuck on the YA shelf; there are many difficult, mature situations and decisions to be made here — and also plenty of blood, guts, and dismemberment. The first book I can understand, the characters were young, but this? This is years later! Also, there’s no awkward love triangles in sight — isn’t that one of the genre characteristics? ( )

Generally, I am a huge fan of Sarah Beth Durst's work, but for some reason this series really isn't doing it for me. I found this one almost impossible to get into as a regular book, so I finally switched to audio in order to get through it, and I got through it is about how I feel about the story.

I think that bloodthirsty elementals in a treehouse world is a very exciting and original starting place, but the pace is a slog, and it's just so darn repetitive. Repetitive in plots, repetitive in language (if I never hear Aryan... and Lore, Aryan... and Lore in a dramatic voice again it will be too damn soon) (also blood, blood, blood - are they vampires? just staaaaaap, please), very flat characters that never seem to become as interesting as they potentially could be and the thing just drags on. And on. And on.

Have zero interest in reading book 3. It looks like it will be the same plot (path to queenship) repeated yet again. I kept waiting for there to be some kind of breakthrough in how the human-elemental relationship works, but sadly, I'm just going to keep waiting. ( )

Wow I loved this book! I was a bit skeptical at first because this book follows a different MC who has children, and I'm not usually a fan of small children in books. I think Durst handled the children well and there was only one small section from the children's POV that I didn't really enjoy. This definitely exceeded my expectations. The stakes are incredibly high and there's a lot more action in this book than in Queen of Blood. Once I got to about the 50% mark I didn't want to put it down and the ending is fantastic. I'm excited to pick up Queen of Sorrow next and see the conclusion to this trilogy. ( )
