From the instant New York Times bestselling author of blockbuster thrillers In a Dark, Dark Wood and The Woman in Cabin 10 comes a chilling new novel of friendship, secrets, and the dangerous games teenaged girls play.

On a cool June morning, a woman is walking her dog in the idyllic coastal village of Salten, along a tidal estuary known as the Reach. Before she can stop him, the dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick, but to her horror, turns out to be something much more sinister.

The next morning, three women in and around Londonâ??Fatima, Thea, and Isaâ??receive the text they had always hoped would never come, from the fourth in their formerly inseparable clique, Kate, that says only, "I need you."

The four girls were best friends at Salten, a second-rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel. Each different in their own way, the four became inseparable and were notorious for playing the Lying Game, telling lies at every turn to both fellow boarders and faculty. But their little game had consequences, and as the four converge in present-day Salten, they realize their shared past was not as safely buried as they had once hoped.

Atmospheric, twisty, and with just the right amount of chill to keep you wrong-footed, The Lying Game is told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, lending itself to becoming another unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christ… (plus d'informations)

The Lying Game par Ruth Ware

  1. 10
Les disparues du marais par Elly Griffiths (MissBrangwen)
MissBrangwen: The settings of these novels are similar (vast and desolate beaches, marshes and tidal flats), only that "The Crossing Places" is a much better novel in my opinion, while in "The Lying Game", the setting was one of the few aspects I enjoyed at all.

I never thought I would enjoy a Ruth Ware novel so little, but "The Lying Game" is dreadfully drawn out and has a cliched and predictable mystery. There is close to nothing that felt fresh or original in this story; I feel as if I've read the same plot dozens of times before, and there was nothing about this one that made it stand out. The writing is solid, but it doesn't save the rest of the elements. Also, there is a bizarrely persistent thread of Islamophobia towards one main character, and although at one point another character makes a weak attempt at "understanding" her friends religion, the sheer amount of snide remarks made and prejudice towards the Muslim woman that go unchecked just don't sit well with me. Well-written and intriguing, but not compelling. Perhaps I did not love it, because I could not relate to a single character in this book. ( )

THE LYING GAME is told from the perspective of Isa Wilde, a 30-something Londoner and mother of a baby girl. Isa befriended Kate, Fatima, and Thea as a teen when they attended Salten House, a boarding school in a small coastal English town. The foursome had a "lying game" they liked to play, which of course earned them the reputation of being cruel liars. After tragedy strikes and they're faced with a scandal at school, the girls leave Salten House and go separate ways, but the stress of what happened there will continue to haunt them. Fast forward 17 years, and the four women must return to Salten to face the lies of their past.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Ruth Ware is one of my favorite authors, but I don't think this book had the best build up of tension. Lots of drama though! I was very curious about the mystery that the women were hiding, but I felt like the plot was a bit too slow moving. I think I would have preferred hearing other characters' POVs instead of just staying in Isa's head. I did love the creepy atmosphere of the setting. Kate's home is a tumbledown mill right on the water. A solid mystery, though I was hoping for more suspense, less drama.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. ( )

It Always Comes out in the Wash

I am off to a really good start this year go me in 2022. It’s been 21 days and I haven’t bought a book yet and for me that is progress. The Lying Game was one of the two books given to me by my secret Santa from my online book club. What I love about The Lying Game is that it’s an evocative and page-turning novel that will leave an imprint on the psyche of those who read it. I finished it a few days ago and the story still stays with you. Lying to protect those you love? Or telling the truth and ultimately hurting those who need you the most? Ruth Ware does a phenomenal job at slowly bringing her readers into the story and then smacking them with the cold hard truth. She has a way of making dark characters very likable and keeping the reader engaged from start to finish. This is a great book. It's a bit dark, and the setting sets the mood up for this perfectly. It's a bit sad- finally understanding what was really going on is sure to turn the coldest hearts soft. And it's an overall powerful read. I have read three books by Ms. Ware and I have to say this one kept me the most engaged. Overall, a very solid four stars. I know that you are going to say that this review doesn’t say much about the story and you would be correct I didn’t. I will however say that this story tests the bonds of friendship beautifully and is worth every minute I spent reading it.

The Reach is wide and quiet this morning, the pale blue sky streaked with pink mackerel-belly clouds, the shallow sea barely rippling in the slight breeze, and so the sound of the dog barking breaks into the calm like gunshots, setting flocks of gulls crying and wheeling in the air.
