The book is about a young boy named Matt who is in high school he’s awkward and not very popular. His best friend Keith is handsome, tall, outgoing, smart, and gets all the girls. Matt wishes that Keith’s life would turn around and it does and now Matt has all of the luck. Throughout the books it shows how Matt grows as a person and how their friendship develops throughout the struggles of a friendship.

Eighth- grader Matt Green has a best friend who seems to have everything: a budding modeling career (he’s that good looking); girlfriends galore; and he’s the star of the school basketball team.
Friends since first grade, Matt’s self- admitted J.Q. ( Jealousy Quotient) is on the rise when his friend Keith’s life appears to be going even better than usual. Keith just authored and starred a rock musical, but Matt, who is a guitar whiz, wasn’t invited to play in it.
Matt is also able to get an occasional date, even though he stands at only 5’1,” but still considrs himself to be in Keith’s shadow.
Backstage after the opening night performance of Keith’s opera, Matt discovers that his date is noticeably more interested in Keith than with her own date- Matt. After indulging in a few beers, Matt spews forth his secret jealous wishes to another friend- that Keith would suddenly be knocked off of his pedestal as the school’s all around legend. Matt’s wishes appear to be coming true when, among other things going wrong, Keith flubs a key shot at the basketball game and causes the team to lose. His girlfriend also apparently turns out to be gay.
Later,Matt goes though a period of intense guilt over the bad “wishes” aimed at Keith, and wonders if they have actually caused Keith’s bad luck streak.
The book’s dialog is laugh- out- loud funny in places, and flows naturally. However, occasional profanity and alcohol use may concern some middle school readers.
Altogether, though, the book is a thoughtful portrayal of the angst a teen might endure when loyalty to a friend and jealousy of him collide.
This book should appeal to both boys and girls, since it delves fairly deep into emotional issues that face many teens – anxiety over dating, social status, and friendship difficulties.
This is a good choice for high school and most middle school library collections.
