Cannons play an important part of the rich history of Texas, from Spanish Colonial times through the Civil War. They were famously used at the Battle of Gonzales, the Siege of Bexar, and at the Alamo and San Jacinto. Much is known about these cannons, but there is still ample room for the mysterious lost cannons that abound in our folklore. Several stories of cannons buried or lost crossing rivers have circulated among Texans for centuries.This book describes these lost Texas cannons, bringing folklore anecdotes together with archival research to tantalize the reader with the possibility that some of these legends are true, waiting for some intrepid adventurer to mount an effort and find them.A revised edition in 2018 includes more details on the cannons lost in the San Antonio River by the Alamo, and adds a new, fascinating story about buried cannons filled with gold at Oakland, Texas, titled The Treasure of Punta de Llano.
