I read about this book either in the New York Times or Washington Post and added it to my To Be Read list because it clearly was meant for me as it was described as a cross between GONE GIRL and THE NEWSROOM. It was a good book and I did enjoy it a lot. The voice of our protagonist is a good one and she is given enough depth to seem realistic. She even has flaws which is very important when reading so you aren't getting a simplistic perfect lead. I suspect I'll look for more books from Ms. Kovac in the future. Being compared to Gone Girl is a bit misleading. The Cutaway is a mystery. Not a thriller. This is told through the perspective of a News Producer named Virginia Knightly so not only do we have a behind-the-scenes look in the newsroom, we witness her actively interviewing/gathering information on Evelyn's disappearance. Occasionally, I felt as if there was too much going on plot wise but it wasn't that much of a distraction. I was hoping for a bit more character development but overall, The Cutaway turned out to be an enjoyable read. *ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
"There's something about the disappearance of a beautiful young attorney--she leaves a Georgetown restaurant after a dispute with her husband, and is never seen alive again--that grips television news producer Virginia Knightly from the moment the 'MISSING' notice lands on her desk. A brilliant producer, but also a tormented soul and an isolated workaholic, Virginia--the only woman of power at her station--has an instant and eerie sense of connection to, indeed becomes obsessed with, the haunting eyes of the unnamed woman in this grainy photo. Despite skepticism from her peers, Knightly suspects this ambitious young lawyer may be at the heart of something far more sinister, which prompts her to abandon-- only momentarily she tells herself-- her producer role to go back into the field to investigate just what happened to Evelyn Carney. Risking her career, her sanity, and perhaps even her own life, Knightly dives deep into the dark underbelly of Washington D.C. only to find it's a place where politics and business restfully, sometimes criminally, collide-- a place where ambition can be lethal") -- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

[a: Christina Kovac|15401868|Christina Kovac|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1474402164p2/15401868.jpg] writes with powerful impact. [b: The Cutaway|30753708|The Cutaway|Christina Kovac|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1471179943s/30753708.jpg|51302156] is a suspense filled novel. I could have added 'mystery,' and police / law-enforcement as tags. #politics cannot help bleed through; the story is set in Washington D.C. The main focus is news and investigative journalism.
The main protagonist Virginia Knightly, is a gifted TV News producer. Virginia is a strong woman who has made her way to the top, and will never put 'the story,' on a back burner. She is ethical and tenacious.
Perhaps this is just my point of view, but the undercurrent of women's issues that are woven through the story speak the loudest to me.
The characters are realistic. The writing is excellent. Every word counts.
I have recommended [b: The Cutaway|30753708|The Cutaway|Christina Kovac|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1471179943s/30753708.jpg|51302156] to other librarians looking for a "suspense" read. Yes, for our library collection too.
When I first saw the cover and title, I was thinking horror and homicide. There is homicide, intrigue and mystery. Suspense is #1. ( )
