"In this powerful debut collection, Vanessa Hua gives voice to immigrant families navigating a new America. Tied to their ancestral and adopted homelands in ways unimaginable in generations past, these memorable characters straddle both worlds but belong to none. From a Hong Kong movie idol fleeing a sex scandal, to an obedient daughter turned Stanford imposter, to a Chinatown elder summoned to his village, to a Korean-American pastor with a secret agenda, the characters in these ten stories vividly illustrate the conflict between self and society, tradition and change. In "What We Have is What We Need," winner of The Atlantic student fiction prize, a boy from Mexico reunites with his parents in San Francisco. When he suspects his mother has found love elsewhere, he fights to keep his family together. With insight and wit, she writes about what wounds us and what we must survive. Her searing stories explore the clash of cultures and the complex, always shifting allegiances that we carry in ourselves, our family, and our community. DECEIT AND OTHER POSSIBILITIES marks the emergence of a remarkable new writer"--… (plus d'informations)

Interesting theme, and I appreciated the breadth of experiences focused around this point. It's apparent these stories are collected from years of writing as the voice advances. Worth reading but not going on my favorite shorts shelf. ( )

This short story collection disappointed. I admit to being particularly ambivalent about the short story genre for exactly the issues I encountered in this title: lack of development, exploration of topics that are predictable, characters who were difficult to engage with. ( )

I so wanted to love this collection to perhaps include it in a post-pandemic bookclub. Books about people and how their ethnicity influences their lives and the way there are seen in society are of particular interest. So, when it became clear that I would no longer be taking long road trips so that I might listen to the CD's, I scoured the house looking for a way to listen to what seems to be an out-of-date technology and I settled in for an escape into other people's stories. Yeah well, I didn't connect with the first story then couldn't figure out how to jump to another story, after several failed attempts, I finally gave up. So this isn't as much a review of the book as an eye-opening experience in the use and reliance on the ease of technology ( )

I received this book of short stories through the Early Reviewers Program. The book is a collection of short stories written by Vanessa Hua. The stories are about immigrants' experiences living in America. Every story tells of deceit - an unfaithful wife, a daughter who lies about her acceptance into college, a man who uses a movie star to advance his own standing - amid tradition. social hierarchy, cultural bias, and racism. The stories are well told but I found them depressing. ( )

A collection of stories about immigrant families in the United States. A familiar theme in the stories are Tradition, generation changes, and conflict .
Well written with memorable characters.
This was an audio Cd and the narrator was pleasant to listen to.
I would definitely read another book by Vanessa Hua.
I received this book in exchange for a review. ( )
