Due to the imperishable nature of the fired clay, ceramic artifacts left by early man provide the most continuous record available of his gradual change from the nomadic hunter and cave dweller to the urban artisan of ancient cities.

Preface 2nd ed: In preparing a new edition of Ceramics: A Potter's Handbook, I have considerably reorganized and expanded the material.

Preface: I suspect that most of us still recall with pleasure childhood experiences after a summer rain--wading through pools of rain water and feeling the pliant clay squeeze between our toes.
