4.5 Stars!

This is a Lisa Henry I’ve never seen before. Well, maybe with her DiscontentedWinter alter ego, but I typically associate her with angst, drama, and suspense. This was the complete opposite.

Know that you’ll get totally likeable characters in the spastic Nick, who lacks a bit of confidence but never on spewing what’s immediately on his mind. It’s his last summer before college and there’s lots of pressure to prepare for the next level. However, Nick’s drowning in the expectations others have of him, and all he wants to do is hook up with his sexy coworker Jai.

Jai’s time in town is fleeting. He’s home for the summer to earn money before he leaves off again to travel the world for the rest of the year, but there’s a snag in his plans and it comes in the form of the bumbling, no filter Nick, who propositions him. How can Jai say no?

This overflows with funny and embarrassment and cock blocking in all forms of epic proportions. It was smart with pop culture love, and this made me laugh as Nick and Jai struggle to figure out their wants and needs and goals. Don’t worry, as this never shorts the reader on the feels either.

I should know better than to think Henry could ever be a one note author. Again, full of humor that’s in the spirit of American Pie but oh so much more. This was a fabulous reprieve from #reallifeproblems that I very much appreciated and was perfectly, just what I needed!

I have never laughed so much. At anything.

If you dislike stream-of-consciousness humor this isn't for you. But man, if you do, dive in. I loved how it ended, too.

I rarely re-read books now, but this is on the short-list. Still laughing. Highly recommended. ( )

I picked this up wanting to read something light, and funny, and a little bit sticky sweet. Got exactly what I asked for.

Edit: I had to come back to this "review", because I noticed I was still thinking of the characters. There really was a lot I enjoyed about this, I think pegging this as "just" fluff might take away from that.

I'll just list some of the things I liked:
- Best friends, one of whom is gay and the other straight
- No sexual tension between said friends
- Sweet yet flawed characters
- Parents who love their kid and only want the best for him
- Even when said parents and kid don't really know how to communicate with each other
- Relatable angst - I can still remember being nineteen, moving out to college and being ambushed by hysterical crying on my way to the flat hundreds of miles away from my childhood home

Sooo I reached a new low.

I wanted to buy this story in a hard copy for my 'collection' .

Before reading I had this whole conversation.. with myself.

Rational me: You ain't got money yo (I don't know why my rational side talks like this. But sometimes it does)

Impulsive me: Oeh, I forgot about that one!

Rational me: That was too easy.

...Few weeks later

Impulsive me: *reading a review on Goodreads* WHAT?! GTFO!

Rational me: Whut? Wha' happened?

Impulsive me: SOMEONE COMPARED ADULTING 101 TO FANFICTION!

Rational me: So? *yawns because it's one o clock in the morning*

Impulsive me: LISA HENRY IS A GODDESS. BUT I CAN'T SPENT MONEY ON FANFICTION! SHE WRITES THAT FOR FREE!

Rational me: *getting angry* Are you for real? How many times have I see you crying about her fanfiction stuff? And moaning you wish she could write that for real? And now you're bitching about something you haven't read yet, and you just take somebody's word for it. THIS IS LISA HENRY! WHEN HAS SHE LET YOU DOWN?!

Impulsive me: but but but...

Rational me: NO BUTS! BUY THAT SHIT!

Impulsive me: wait...what? What about money?

Rational me: IT'S 0,58 cents OFF! That's 7% less! Buy it!

Impulsive: YEAH OK LET'S DO IT! ALSO BUY EVERYTHING!

Rational me: No that's not what I said... I just meant before you judge a book, read it first...

***After reading***
Impulsive me: I don't know what people were talking about. That was nothing like her fanction stories. Yeah I can see why Nick would be a bit like Stiles but he missed one big aspect of his character: his dad. I was totally missing the love between those two and the confidence that came with it. Also.. I think I may have ADHD.

Rational me: It would't surprise me. Now that we have that out of our system. Can we read more science-fiction? Because you know we stil have..

Impulsive me: MORE LISA HENRY!

Rational me: No. Remember that we wanted to read more diverse bo...

Impulsive me: LISA HENRY!

Rational me: FOR FUCK SAKES! *Gives up*

* my version of being rational is not always what other people find rational. Like having a conversation with yourself. Some would call that a monologue.
** being impulsive doesn't always mean that I do stuff without thinking. It also means that I feel stuff that makes no sense. When I think about it, I almost always discover that my first impulsive feelings aren't always the correct ones... or were appropriate.. ( )
