This is a coffee-table size book with historical plans, concept art, models, and photographs of various works at Disney Parks over the years created by Disney Imagineering. They work to create 3-D experiences based on animation, landscaping, architecture, and of course engineering, many of which have to be created in house because they're creating things that have never been done. I would've liked if this book had more behind-the-scenes, how-did-they-do-that detail instead of lots of hokey quotes about "sparks" and "dreams," but I suppose Michael Eisner didn't want to give the secrets away. Yes, it’s another book on Imagineering and on the construction of the Disney parks. And, yes, once again this is a beautiful book that provides insight into the Disney creative process while sharing the art that this creativity produces. This book focuses on the changes that have occurred since the previous Imagineering book published in the 90’s. That means the areas currently being built for Disney California Adventure only receive a passing mention. That is a shame because there are some incredible things going on there. (Although we still get to see some of the artwork and, particularly fun, pictures of the testing for Mater’s ride.) But this also means there is a larger focus on the Tokyo parks, the Paris parks, and Hong Kong Disney. These are parks that most of us don’t get to see, and these pictures and descriptions remind me just how badly I want to visit these other parks. (Particularly Tokyo – is there anywhere where Imagineering imagination has been allowed to run any more amok?)

If you are a casual Disney fan, this is a maybe have book. But any real fan of Disney needs to add this to their collection. ( )

This book details how Walt Disney and his crew conceptualized Walt Disney World and Disneyland and how every area in both theme parks came into fruition. Filled with myriad pictures, this book captures readers' imaginations regarding the conceptualization of the two most famous theme parks in the world. ( )

This book has been one of the most eagerly-anticipated Disney book releases in ages, and it certainly lives up to the hype. Principally compiled by former WDI (Imagineering) Show Writer Melody Malmberg (wife of WDI's Joe Rohde), and vetted by an editorial board that reads like a proverbial Who's Who in WDI, this book strives to take readers further into the world of Imagineering. Written more as a companion than a sequel to the original work, this book focuses on the "zen" of Imagineering... how and why it is done. There's a focus on techniques, culture, and the many disciplines that make up Imagineering. For Disney park fans, this book offers a wealth of concept art, photos, and even a few tiny sneak peeks at upcoming attractions. A definite must-own for any fan of the Disney parks and what makes them tick. ( )
