I can see why folk see this as a spiritual successor to Fruits Basket! While Komugi is nowhere near the same archetype as Tohru (sweet, nurturing, kind, somewhat passive much of the time) it does have some of those hallmarks.

School "Princes" who are beloved and hold themselves aloof, one is super friendly, one is (I'm sorry Fushimi) tsundere, one who is a bit reckless, one who is outwardly indifferent.

The art is pretty and I generally liked the pacing. It comes off a bit like Twilight tho in some dynamics (Komugi & her father, the constant push for Komugi to leave them alone for her own good, their inability to obliviate her like all other girls) but I loved how...pragmatic Komugi was.

"My classmates are animal spirits in human form but they won't hurt me so why make a big deal?" Really I think she finds them as tiresome as a couple find her, but they all need a connection. ( )

This manga started off resembling Twilight, except with a sensible female lead and an overly friendly male lead. Then it took a turn towards Fruits Basket. For some reason, I also got a vibe of Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) from this one. And of course, some Shoujo cliche. Still, this was such a cute story and turned out to be one awesome read. I'm not sure if I've read too many books like this and am totally jaded or that the author has read too many books like this and is regurgitating all the cliches without even trying to be original. Aside from a few cute doggy gags, this book doesn't have much to offer. There isn't much energy to the storytelling. The characters don't react realistically; they just do what is necessary to set up and move along the thin storyline. I might pick up a second volume to see if the author picks a bolder direction for the story now that the set-up is all in place, but I won't feel like I'm missing out if I don't come across it. ( )

Pretty boys, new girl, evil bullies. Normal high school romance ingredients...BORING! Let's spice it up by making the pretty boys animals!

This series is a pretty cliche shojo but it's so adorable that it warrants a read...or two. While similar to Fruits Basket, this story has a wilder vibe to it that is more like Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki.

This series has 4 volumes. ( )
