Douglas Coupland gets Canada, and he has set out to re-invent his country with his particular brand of insight, humour and visual acuity. Heartfelt homage to Terry Fox. Nanaimo bars for the soul. Unforgettable railway images revealing the country's historic central nervous system. Startling photography from Chris Gergley, Ed Burtynsky, Geoffrey James, Roberta Bondar and many more. And a fetching double-headed Canada goose which will forever change the way you look at hunting decoys. Souvenir of Canada created a sensation when it was published July 1st, 2001. A stubby dominated the country's best-seller lists for months, and made the front pages of every major Canadian newspaper. Souvenir of Canada 2 picks up where its predecessor left off. As with the best jazz, the riffs are fresh, never quite predictable, and full of delicious rhythm and subtle humour. This book is packed full of powerfully resonant images, and unexpected juxtapositions that reveal a new Canada, one at home in a new century. No lighthouses, grain elevators or teepees here. Only a country as experimental and unexpected as Canada could inspire a book as eclectic and wonderful as this one.… (plus d'informations)

There is still plenty left to say about Canada of course, but the problem is that Coupland said his piece so well the first time around that '2' reads like a variation on the theme of Canada's (and the world's) uncertain future, the lingering effects of British imperialism on the country's identity (not something one thinks about with Canada), and uniquely Canadian pop culture--thriving despite the best efforts of MTV and other American programming--all mixed with brief personal essays from Coupland.

Did you know there is a screw driver nearly unique to Canada? Americans, British, and other Peoples of Earth: Meet the Robertson.

So, while less successful than 'Souvenir of Canada', 'Souvenir of Canada 2' still offers insight, especially in the centerpiece of "Canada House", Coupland's art installation. Given nearly 30 pages, mostly pictures, it's like the still-lifes from the first book scaled up to fill an entire house. Not having much experience or training in art I'm a like-what-I-see person when it comes to modern art, but I really liked "Canada House". Coupland's personality really comes out in several of the pieces.

I was also reminded of Terry Fox in this book, an inspirational figure for the fight against cancer similar to Ryan White raising AIDS awareness in America. Fox was singularly more badass, however. Attempting (and getting very far) a run across Canada with a prosthetic leg). Coupland wrote a whole book about him, too. I might have to pick it up. ( )

This follow-up to Coupland's earlir edition of nation-sensibility-building is not as strong as the first. The first book was pretty much divided between reasonably similarly structured mini-essays and photographs. This time around, the essays vary much more widely in intent and length, they're more loosely written and more autobiographical, and the images don't transmit information about the country with the sense of depth and feeling they did the first time around.

However, the book is a lot angrier than the first, and for that reason alone, if you read the first one, you should follow it up with this.

This book is dedicated to my mother. She likes to joke that she keeps the flags of all nations in the basement, but we know darn well that there's always only ever been one.
