"World War II, October 21, 1942. A B-17 bomber drones high over the Pacific Ocean, sending a desperate SOS into the air. The crew is carrying America's greatest living war hero on a secret mission deep into the battle zone. But the plane is lost, burning through its final gallons of fuel. At 1:30 p.m., there is only one choice left: an emergency landing at sea. If the crew survives the impact, they will be left stranded without food or water hundreds of miles from civilization. Eight men. Three inflatable rafts. Sixty-eight million square miles of ocean. What will it take to make it back alive?"--Back cover.… (plus d'informations)

A very well told story. I borrowed this from an elementary school child and found the story captivating. It helped me learn more about the history of WWII and a story of perseverance. ( )

This is part of a lovely series that introduces middle grade readers to true events of people being "lost" and finding their way out. Well-written, with great photos. I can see many a kid tearing through this great series! ( )

it was 16 months after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. 7 men are sent on a secret mission to bring a WW1 flying ace to the Pacific. When their plane misses the re fuel spot, they start to prepare for a water landing. When the plane touches down in the water, all 8 men get out safely but they forgot all their rations in the plane. Now the men have to survive long enough in the open pacific for the U.S. air force to find them. Also their Rafts are surrounded by sharks. The odds are sometimes in the aviators favor. Half way through their voyage, one of their airman dies of dehydration. The men have to use their wits in order to survive the open ocean.

This wasn't my favorite book I have read so far. This book tells the tale that actually happened during the second World War. This book describes the hardships the men faced in detail. The men sometimes talk about doing cannibalism if one dies. I like how resourceful the men were when they were stuck in the Pacific. I also can't imagine what the men went through during their voyage. When the men were in the pacific they didn't waist anything that came their way. I would recommended this book to anyone who likes war stories. ( )

This book was interesting book, because it was talking about world war 2 and how this Pilates and how they were on a top secret mission but it fails and they fall in the water near Purl Harbor. ( )
