A wonderful feel good story. So much fun to have an older heroine and hero and their antics aboard ship. ( )

This takes place in 1893 on an ocean liner travelling between New York and England.

I liked the idea here much better than the execution. I liked Penelope, a fifty-year-old widow dependent upon her position as a governess, and I enjoyed her interactions with the older Duke of Olympia. But I found some of the spy plot rushed or confusing, and the resolution for both the romance and the mystery was almost-but-not-entirely satisfying.

Maybe this would read differently if one had previously encountered the Duke in Gray’s other novels? I don’t know. Given the era and the circumstances, I didn’t have an issue with the large age gap between Penelope and the Duke, but if he had been more like her age, it would have been far less ridiculous for the Morrisons to be hoping he’d marry a twenty-year-old. I found this book a bit confusing, as to what type of book that it actually wanted to become. I admired Mrs. Schulyer, but was a bit uninterested by the others involved. Everyone seemed a shade less then real, and the story was a bit stilted. The ending was not completely satisfactory.

As this is the first book I have read featuring the Duke of Olympia, I had no prior knowledge of his character and a complete absence of fondness. It turns out that this is the first of a new series featuring the Duke, which should please those who have been fans of him from previous books.
