Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:The thought-provoking and timely new novel from Melissa de la Cruz, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Alex & Eliza: A Love Story, will have you crying with Jasmine as she finds out she's undocumented – then cheering her on as she fights to stay in the country she loves.

She had her whole life planned.

She knew who she was and where she was going.

Until the truth changed everything.

Jasmine de los Santos has always done what's expected of her. She's studied hard, made her Filipino immigrant parents proud and is ready to reap the rewards in the form of a full college scholarship to the school of her dreams.

And then everything shatters. Her parents are forced to reveal the truth: their visas expired years ago. Her entire family is illegal. That means no scholarships, maybe no college at all and the very real threat of deportation.

As she's trying to make sense of this new reality, her world is turned upside down again by Royce Blakely. He's funny, caring and spontaneous—basically everything she's been looking for at the worst possible time—and now he's something else she may lose.

Jasmine will stop at nothing to protect her relationships, family and future, all while fighting the hard truths of being undocumented.

Jasmine is ready to accept the scholarship that she has worked hard for. Jasmine had originally immigrated from the Philippines. Her parents then inform her that their visas expired years ago, and they are in this country illegally. Jasmine has to now navigate what it is like to be illegal in this country.

Also have a print excerpt (ARC) of this title.

This is an excellent and thought provoking book about a political thing that should not be political. Many things that our politicians use for their campaigns are far too complex for easy solutions and deserve real thought and solutions.

Jasmine is caught in this nightmare as well as her family and all who care for her including the Congressman's son.

Ms.de la Cruz knows first hand about the difficulties of people who truly want the American dream and become victims of the current system.

If you have ever heard anything about immigration, you owe it to yourself to read this. It's not just criminals, drug dealers, etc., that are caught in this web. Chances are you know people in your own life whom are caught in it, live in fear and are victims to those willing to take advantage of them.

Highly recommended. ( )

Wonderful read. Although this is just an excerpt, it includes great information on the author. I have this title as an eBook, have read it and was very moved by it. As a high school librarian I met several young people facing this problem.

FROM PUBLISHER: Jasmine de los Santos has always done what’s expected of her. She’s studied hard, made her Filipino immigrant parents proud and is ready to reap the rewards in the form of a full college scholarship to the school of her dreams.

And then everything shatters. Her parents are forced to reveal the truth: their visas expired years ago. Her entire family is illegal. That means no scholarships, maybe no college at all and the very real threat of deportation.

As she’s trying to make sense of this new reality, her world is turned upside down again by Royce Blakely. He’s funny, caring and spontaneous—basically everything she’s been looking for at the worst possible time—and now he’s something else she may lose.

Jasmine will stop at nothing to protect her relationships, family and future, all while fighting the hard truths of being undocumented.

I only have an excerpt of this book, but want the whole thing. Anxious to find out how and if she solves her problem. I have encountered this situation with some of my high school students (usually it's the ones who really want to succeed) and had no clue how to help them.

We, the citizens of the USA, need to talk reasonably with all about this, find a solution for those who actually want the American dream and force our legislators to write laws that accomplish this. With the exception of Native Americans, we are all immigrants. It's past time to find a solution. ( )

I read this book in a day. My emotions were up and down with each page as I was strongly affected by a novel written about a Filipino American family. The title of the book "Something in Between" encompasses an emotional feeling for many 2nd generation Filipino Americans. We were raised in America, yet love our homeland unconditionally. We are held in high regard for our strength in English, yet a disappointment for our weakness in Tagalog and other dialects. We have American swag, yet a Filipino hue. With this novel being a rare novel that has a Filipina American as the main protaganist, this was an emotional read.

Jasmine de los Santos wasn't just a character, but also represented a young me. Yes I'm male, but the struggles and pain she felt in the novel resonated with the uncertainty I felt as a Filipino American teenager. I know there are more like me who can relate to this gray area feeling and although I can only speak from my limited Filipino American self, I have a feeling this is shared by many American children of first generation immigrants.

I felt every aspect of Jasmine's Filipino family and her struggles as a Filipino American teenager. In my mind, Melissa de la Cruz's writing style in this novel gives readers a snapshot of what it's like being Filipino American. Things happen quickly and it's not served on a silver platter. Filipino American lives are jumbled, constantly switching between our "Filipino" and "American" identities. It's an internal switch, undetected by most, unless you are attuned to this push and pull.

The author gives a realistic view of the general theme of immigration in America. There was an air of uncertainty throughout the book, yet their resolve to keep going and use humor as a coping mechanism kept me turning the page.

And the foundation is a love story between Jasmine and Royce, a love story on the cusp of sappiness until it's pulled back just enough for me to read on. I can see some readers growing annoyed at Jasmine's up and down feelings, but I didn't look at it this way. Jasmine was going through teenage love, and as we all can probably agree on, teenage love is an emotional ride of extreme highs and lows.

Thank you Melissa de la Cruz for writing this, to Harlequin for publishing this book. I was strongly affected by "Something In Between" and highly recommend.

Great if you want to be beat over the head with the author's immigration policy agenda. ( )
