This story of a broadwood square piano bought by a Mrs Dorothy Findlay from Glasgow in 1804 and the author's mother in Ireland in 1977 includes a short history of broadwoods and traces uncanny connections between the Findlays, Glasgow tobacco merchants & East Indiamen, and the Dennys, famous Dumbarton shipbuilders; TD Findlay and Peter Denny, the author's great-grandfather, established The Irrawaddy Flotilla, immortalised by Kipling in The Road to Mandalay. It also features the romantic tragedy of Mrs Findlay's daughter, 'The Flighty Dorothea', who 'ran off' with her litigious piano teacher John Donaldson, later to become Professor of Music at Edinburgh University.
