This book describes the desert as a provider. It talks about all the different
species from the desert that you can benefit from. For example, the prickly cactus provide tunas
for you to eat. It can also provide herbs and flowers. This is an amazing book! It describes different sceneries from the desert ( )

This book is full of metaphors and similes that make reading it so much fun! The pictures are beautiful and accompany the text to help give extra context clues. It was interesting to compare the text in both English and Spanish. It's written in a way where it almost doesn't even feel like poetry. In fact it didn't even occur to me until I was reflecting on the book at a later time that it was written in a poem format. It's a great way to introduce the idea of setting and personification. It could easily be used throughout elementary and middle school to teach these concepts.
The message of this book is that setting and location can play just as significant role in a story as a person. The desert is an important part of the narrator and plays a big part in her day to day life. It shaped her as a person. ( )

"The Dessert is My Mother/ El Desierto Es MI Madre" is a fantastic bilingual book. This picture book helps young readers understand the power of poetry. Through the use of powerful language and illustrations Mora shows the reader how important the dessert is to her.
even more, I think that comparing the dessert to a mother made the bond that she has with this place look stronger. ( )

This book is a book portraying a poem with images. It is in both English and Spanish. I found the story a bit hard to interpret. As you usually read a poem multiple times, I found that I needed to read the book multiple times in order to understand what exactly the message was. I think that it may be too complex for the audience that the book is aiming towards. I do think that the message is important that a setting can be anywhere you are and it can have a deeper meaning than what it looks like on the surface. The overarching theme is, how a place can provide things that you need and serve as a human connection. ( )

This book is a light-hearted sweet story of a girl and the love shown to her by a desert. I love how the desert can be compared to a motherly figure. She provides, cares for, and teaches just like a mother. I think it is a cool idea to have the setting be a character. The way they use spanish equally as english, in my opinion makes the story unique and have this sense about it that makes it enjoyable to read. It is a poem style book, but i found it to be repetitive at times, I would have enjoyed some different style situations. ( )
