Stretch your students' mathematical imaginations to their limits as they solve challenging real-world and mathematical problems that extend concepts from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Advanced Common Core Math Explorations: Ratios, Proportions, and Similarity. Model the solar system, count the fish in a lake, choose the best gear for a bike ride, solve a middle school's overcrowding problem, and explore the mysteries of Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio. These books provide students with challenging, engaging, and relevant activities related to the CCSS. I enjoy each exploration as well as the multiple stages. I appreciate that the answers are provided as well as questions/wonderings that students may have. I liked the mock dialogues between teacher and students. This will be helpful for me to explain, scaffold, or support students in the classroom. I hope to adapt some of these activities to my classroom. Thanks! ( )

I am not an elementary teacher. I teach preschool. However, I am a parent who is very involved with my children's education so I was drawn to this book to help me supplement my gifted children in math skills. I like how user friendly and intuitive it proves to be. I can clearly see ways to help support Common Core methods from home which usually can be quite different and difficult on my end. I will definitely continue to use this as a resource to support math skills here at home. ( )

This book makes my brain hurt, but in a good way! As a student, I learned to tackle math problems with equations and, while I could usually come up with the right equations, I didn't always understand what the equation truly meant or how it applied to the real world. Burkhart's approach takes into account a variety of learning strategies and is designed to challenge students' thinking and get them actively involved in understanding and solving realistic problems. This is a book that has many challenging real-world problems and could be very beneficial for anyone teaching middle school math (or even higher). I would recommend this book to math teachers who are looking for that something extra to use to challenge their students. ( )
