Written to mark the centenary of WW1 and the contribution of the Shetland Islands.
Very well illustrated with contemporary and modern photographs, including museum exhibits. The concise text outlines the islands' role in the war - it was base for the 10th Cruiser Squadron, converted Atlantic liners, engaged in enforcing the blockade of Germany. It also supplied over 1400 volunteers for the Royal Navy and some 500 volunteers and enlisted into the army. But it is the photographs that make this book so valuable - the ships, islanders and incomers fill the pages. ( )
