If you can cope with reading something like this style, almost exclusively in the first person, you'll have a ball with this book, as it follows the hapless narrator in his erratic journey through life from confusing beginnings in Vitebsk.
Occasionally this first-person narrative makes for hard reading, but the humour carries it through towards a somewhat surprising conclusion. Not all of that humour is directed at the obvious targets (it's aimed at a british readership) , and the author makes some fairly zany forays into alternative history here and there.
Reader thinking this is all over? It is now. Overall, more hits than misses, and top marks for invention and absurdity. Would Lenin laugh at this? I suspect not. ( )
