Do not let Them find you.Do not let Them see your truth. Do not reveal yourself to anyone you love, because they will be the first to die.Protect yourself from Them at any cost.If you are discovered, never, ever stop running.Henriette Andrews is an Anomaly, and she knows the rules by heart. But if she is going to run, she is going to do so with a purpose-she is going to live on terms solely her own. And, somewhere along the way, Henri is going to meld the gift imparted to her by her mother's genetic code into a weapon. Her weapon will be as brutal and relentless as those They use against her people; as cunning and wise as every Agent and Anomaly she comes across, and as loving and as hateful in equal measure as the experiences that craft her into the person she wakes up as each morning. But are lines so easily drawn? Are good and evil so easily distinguishable as black from white? Henri must find the truth, and she must manage to stay alive-and somehow preserve her humanity-while doing so.Brought together by a connection deeper than blood and bone, born from soul-permeating likeness that is both blessing and curse, Anomalies are beginning to rise... And nothing can ever be the same again.… (plus d'informations)

The fact it took me nearly a year to read this book is indicative of what I thought of it. Villainous feels like a first draft. There is an interesting underlying idea and I see parallels that could align to slavery and the need for reparations in the United States. That said, the writing itself and the presentation of the story felt very amateur.

I think if the author had wanted to go a traditional route, an agent and an editor and various drafting stages would’ve helped make Villainous a good book. There’s a lot of potential here, but it spends too long repeating the same story over and over again as the protagonist meets new people. There’s also a lot of forgiveness for surprising events that makes it feel unrealistic. There simply aren’t enough obstacles for the protagonist, even in a world where the author claims everything is an obstacle.

I had high hopes at the beginning, but ultimately, I can’t recommend this book. It’s so repetitive that I forced myself through it because I hoped for redemption. I wouldn’t recommend it to someone else. If the author ever wanted to go back and re-draft, I think there’s a lot of potential. As it stands, “potential” is the best I can say for it. ( )
