Worlds collide in Lindsey Klingele's debut young adult novel, The Marked Girl, an exciting fantasy tale turned upside down. Elissa Sussman, author of Stray, calls The Marked Girl "a magical debut with a big heart." When Cedric, crowned prince of Caelum, and his fellow royal friends (including his betrothed, Kat) find themselves stranded in modern-day LA via a magical portal and an evil traitor named Malquin, all they want to do is get home to Caelum--soon. Then they meet Liv, a filmmaker foster girl who just wants to get out of the system and on with her life. As she and Cedric bond, they'll discover that she's more connected to his world than they ever could've imagined...and that finding home is no easy task. The Marked Girl has humor, heart, and harrowing adventures, perfect for fantasy lovers and reluctant fantasy readers alike.… (plus d'informations)

I've read several YA books where characters from another world, or from the past end up in our time and must cooperate with teens here to survive/get home/accomplish an important task. This stands near the top of them. Interesting players from both worlds, intricate plot, several surprises along the way and a cliffhanger finish. I ordered book two as soon as I closed the cover on this. ( )

This might be a good fit for fans of [a: Cassandra Clare|150038|Cassandra Clare|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1270502031p2/150038.jpg], though there's less focus on the fantasy here. I didn't finish it, because it felt a bit too generic and I wasn't excited about picking it up again. There's romance, adventure, and a girl who learns things about herself. Plus a portal. Decent writing and world building, but nothing particularly groundbreaking.

I initially picked up the book after seeing the book trailer from Booksplosion. I love any type of story that mingles fairytale-ish magical lands and reality, so this story seemed like a great read to me. While I did eventually get hooked, it did take awhile. I feel like the beginning of the story was too slow and too fast all at once. The love interests developed feelings too quickly for me personally, and the characters weren't really developed at all. I was really relieved that the main character wasn't another "Chosen One," as it takes a lot to impress me with that plot line at this point. Once the direction of the story was set in place, I really started to enjoy myself. After that cliffhanger, I'm assuming there will be a second book so I'm excited to see where the author will take the rest of the story! ( )

Conventional, but good. Nothing out of the ordinary from your typical YA fantasy: mysterious/cute boy from Other Realm with a big problem, Special Snowflake Everyday Girl who learns she can save them all. Good characters, decent plot. If you're in the mood for something familiar, try it! ( )

I really liked the idea of this (which is why it's getting 2 stars instead of 1), but gosh did these really potentially dynamic characters fall so flat. It was so plot heavy and convoluted that I didn't really care what happened to any of them. There was a part toward the end that also saved me (and this book) from eye-rolling all the way to Tijuana.
