The last chapter alone is worth it to me, and I can see myself coming back to chapters individually as needed. So much honest truth here. ( )

Finally read this from beginning to end. Love Elisabeth Elliot's works from top to bottom. This one started out a little slow for me, I couldn't get a finger on where she was going exactly but it got better as I went. The overall theme here is, of course, Discipline. Further in she addresses specific areas that we can (or can not) be disciplined (orderly, in control over, etc) in: Body, Mind, Place, Time, Possessions, Work, and Feelings. My favorites were the chapters on the Mind, Place, and Feelings. I love her hard hitting truth, paired with the gentle flow of her words. I took away some great things to ponder, and as I read the Spirit was quick to speak through as well as above the words on the page.

I would recommend reading the whole book if you have time, but I would highly recommend getting a copy and reading on whichever of the specific areas you may struggle to be disciplined in most. ( )

Once more Elisabeth Elliot brings us a book of depth gleaned from years of experience in following the will of God even to the point of living with the tribe of Auca Indians who murdered her husband. It is from such a life that we can learn spiritual insights and in the case of this book, the glad surrender of discipline, an oxymoron to the natural mind. The author comes to the same conclusion as anyone who travels the Christian road, "There are truths that cannot be known except by doing them. The Gospels show many cases of those who wished to understand rather than to obey." But Gospel living "means hearing and doing." How do we break the bad habits and free ourselves from the hold the world has on us so we can obey God and move into close relationship? In this book we have answers from the aurthor dealing with the discipline of the mind, body, possessions, time and feelings as well as work habits and attitude toward one's job. Written in a practical manner with principles easily understood but not so easily followed. ( )

I have read through this book each year for the last 8 years. Each chapter is devoted to an area in our life that calls for Godly disipline and each year I read through it again to hem in the loose ends. ( )

LOVE THIS BOOK! Elliott is one of my favorite authors. I bought this to enhance my study of the spiritual disciplines and it helped me grow in a my understanding of true intimacy with the Father.
