When a swallow takes shelter for a night at the statue's feet, he is surprised by the tears falling from the Happy Prince's eyes. The Prince convinces the swallow to help the very poor villagers of his town by delivering the ruby from his sword, the two sapphires from his eyes, and the gold leaf covering his body. Because of these actions the children are able to eat bread and their well being improves. At the same time, the rich continue their privileged lives oblivious to the hardships of the poor. This is arguably the most famous and well-loved of Oscar Wilde's nine fairy tales, rivalled only by The Selfish Giant'. The Happy Prince has died young and his soul inhabits a beautiful ruby encrusted statue covered all over in gold leaf. From a perch high above the city he is witness to all the poverty, misery and hopelessness in which his people have been living. He encourages a small barn swallow to delay his travels and shower his people with gold. At times sad, this is a heart-warming and beautiful story.' Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
