This is a novel about a decision made in an instant that has repercussions for decades. When Dr. Henry's wife goes into labor during a snowstorm, he ends up delivering the baby with the help of a nurse at his Lexington, Kentucky clinic. But there is an unexpected second baby and this baby has Down's syndrome. What the doctor decides to do puts a secret at the heart of his marriage. So this is a book with a lot going on. It was a bestseller and a book club favorite and if you like a story where all the people have a lot of emotions and secrets and yet somehow a reasonably happy ending, this is the book for you. I didn't buy into the heightened emotions and would have set this book aside had it not been a book club pick. The writing was serviceable enough, I guess. I really dislike the "look at these people having Very Intense Feelings And Not Communicating" trope, so this was never going to be the book for me. I read this book for our February book club pick. It was a well written book and kept a good pace. The subject matter is heart wrenching but I liked the story line. In Kentucky, 1964, Norah Henry goes into labor during a blizzard. Unable to reach the hospital, her husband, Dr. David Henry, must deliver his wife’s twins, a boy and girl, at his own clinic. The boy is healthy, but the girl has Down’s Syndrome. Dr. Henry, having lost his sister at a young age due to a similar condition, hands the girl to his nurse, and tells her to take the infant to an institution. He tells his wife the girl has died. The nurse takes the child but is unable to leave her at the dismal institution. Instead, she decides to leave town and embrace the child as her own. In a desire to spare his wife the grief of dealing with their daughter’s presumed shortened life, David creates a whole new set of problems for their family. The novel covers the separate lives of the twins over twenty-five years. While many portions of it stretch belief beyond the breaking point, it is an unusual premise and is written in a compelling manner. This is a book about mistakes, regret, the ramifications of decisions, and the deleterious effects of keeping secrets. It shows some of the social issues faced at the time and how far we have come as a society in accepting those with mental challenges.
Kim Edwards's debut novel is a winner, and those who read THE MEMORY KEEPER'S DAUGHTER are going to want to read her next one. Highly recommended. Est contenu dansFait l'objet d'une adaptation dansContient un supplémentContient un guide de lecture pour étudiant

This book has touched my heart! The feels!
Way to go! 4.5 stars!
I bought this book back in December.I never got a chance to read it until now.I was busy with my exams and finally I took it out of the shelf this tuesday. After I started reading this book,I got so engrossed in it that I couldn't keep it down for even a moment.I wanted to know what would happen to the characters.
The things I loved about this book was:
1.The time and place it's set in.Beginning in the 1960s the book was very interesting.
2.How it skipped back and forth from the character's lives. It went from David's to Norah's to Caroline's to Paul's life, which were all very realistic.
3.It's life-like characters.I can imagine Dr.David Henry,Norah Henry,Paul Henry,Pheobe and Caroline so easily. While I read the book,I could imagine them talking and arguing or doing whatever they were doing.
4.The way of writing, which is pretty much what I said in point 2.
5.The happy ending!,which is the most important thing of all.I just love them.
Overall the book was a wonderful read.It was something I wanted to read after reading something tragic and beautiful like The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.I'm looking forward to read mor of Kim Edwards' works!
Happy reading!
