The Special Forces team JC2 was created by the police to combat violence and drug crimes in Juxtapose City. Lieutenant Black, an intense young man with a mysterious past and a hatred of the street drug Bliss, is the leader of the police team which frequently targets psypaths, those with psychic powers. When the empath Calyx Starr is pulled from the streets and forced onto his team as part of the police captain's secret agenda, Black must deal not only with Starr's relentless attempts at seduction but also a dangerous telepath with a deadly grudge who has targeted the empath and JC2.Calyx Starr isn't used to being denied. Born on the streets and forced into a life of prostitution to fuel his Bliss habit, Calyx is street-wise and tough, and thinks he can use Black for his own secret plans. However the more Calyx learns about Black and his team, the more the empath begins to think Black may be more than a challenge...he may be the only man Calyx can trust with his life and his heart. This is a terrific and, thankfully, still ongoing series. What follows is about the series as a whole, not just this first book.
I think Black and Calyx are really well-developed characters. Calyx is written as a crazy beautiful blond empath--a sexed up, ready-to-suck-and-fuck, hooked-on-Bliss kinda guy. He's been a prostitute and won't stop behaving like one even after joining the JCPD. But he's very lovable. :)
And that really pisses off his lieutenant, Black, who's the polar opposite. He's JC2's handsome, dark-haired, brooding, control-freak yet oh-so-broken leader. So naturally, Calyx is obsessed (and with good reason! Black is the archetypal strong and silent hero, smoking hot, looks terrific on an electro-bike and is a power bottom...aaand a telepath).
There's a heavy dose of non-con / dub-con throughout. The villains (Dickerson, Sola etc.) and frenemies (Sundhill, Jake, Parker etc.) are very well-written too. It's a complex plot that builds well over the 10 books, each ending on a cliffhanger that left me panting for the next one.
Black's secrets are gradually uncovered over the course of the series, and I was blown away by the big reveal. He has ONE HELL of a backstory and I only ended up loving his character more.
It's admirable how Ms. Owens' writing never gets boring or repetitive, especially in the sex scenes, because Calyx and Black have a lot of sex. A lot. And then some more. I like the covers because (a) they don't feature the models' faces, which allowed me to form an impression of their appearance from the text, plus I really dislike covers with models staring right at the camera and (b) the model who's supposed to be Calyx has ripped but relaxed abs, not clenched so dangerously hard that a muscle might just pop free of skin and hit the reader in the eye.
And finally, I think this series has one of the sweetest, most tender pet names I've ever read - Calyx calls Black "Darkness", and it makes me melt every time. Love love love.
Highly recommended. ( )
