Hansen's book tells the historical tale of six of Africa's royal women. The stories are written with fictional literary elements that increases the interest level for many who may choose to read it. These stories are empowering because they show African women as leaders. I believe African and African American female students would benefit from reading stories of such outstanding women. The stories show how black women were powerful and determined. This was a great book to share with young girls. Each story is well written and accompanied by several illustrations to support it's authenticity. ( ) "African Princess" showcases six African royal women whose stories are as different as the great continent itself. As the book's introduction explains, "The people are as varied as their landscape withe their own languages, music, music, art, religion, stories, and ways of life." This book challenges stereotypes that many people hold about Africa and African people (elephants, lions, hunger, diseases, etc.). "African Princess" looks at women in a way that I believe can empower young girls. The African princesses, though they are separated by centuries, each grow to become strong leaders and advocates for their respective countries. African Princess is an account of women in African history countering the history as defined by accomplishments of men. The book recounts the story of six African princesses from Ancient Egypt to a modern Ugandan princess. The text is engaging and well written. All illustrations are aesthetically pleasing. Many images of artifacts are included with informational captions. The author is documented as a former teacher of twenty two years and to have had several award winning nonfiction books. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
