The duke of Ashton sits at the Opera at Vauxhall Gardens, bored out of his mind, and plans murder. He curses the day that brought the little governess, destitute and sad, at his door eight months ago, to upset his careless if a bit meaningless existence. How could he have guessed the terrible, evil secrets she was hiding? And now that he knows all, the truth appears wilder, even more despicable than even he could have imagined. He hadn't counted on losing his heart to her, of course, but he did. What he doesn't know is that a tendril of the shadows of madness and sin that followed Beatrice to his door is still out there, looking for something to devour. The only one who can save him from the darkness is the girl herself, but he knows he'll never see her again. He who once prided himself on his indifference to other human beings, feels his chest constrict with pain every time he even thinks of her. Beatrice, smart, gentle, kind-hearted, lovely.Ruined. A perfect blend of darkness and light, this Regency reverse retelling of Jane Eyre will break your heart as well as uplift it.… (plus d'informations)

Review from Amazon:

First I want to say, I have never read Jane Eyre, it's one of those books that has been on my Master TBR list forever. I'll get to it someday. So I didn't know what to expect.

The start of this book honestly had me a bit confused. I think it was the old-timey English being used. I had just finished reading Harry Potter just days before, so the jump in language threw me off. But after I finished the first chapter it was flowing much better in my brain and I was really getting into it.

It is very beautifully written. It paints a nice elegant image of the time period. It's all so fancy and lovely. There is the odd spelling error, but that happens in all books.

The sexual tension between the two main characters is crazy. I was dying to get to that first kiss. It was perfect. I could not care about any of the other characters, I just wanted Beatrice and Dominic to be happy.

I was sent on a rollercoaster of emotion. I just can't. These two silly humans just can't get their shit together. I want them to make-out forever. Jeeze. They are both so frustrating. Just when you think they are all good and happy, something ridiculous happens and my heart breaks. Gah!

The ending was a breath of fresh air. Finally!! ( )

I had difficulty connecting with the writing style and gave up in the end. While there is nothing wrong with the plot, the writing itself wasn't engaging, at least for me. Sorry, M.C. and thank you for the review copy.
