The only real questions with this book are "is it a travesty" and "is it amusing". No to the first and yes to the second.

Ferri and Conrad have now entrenched themselves as successors to Goscinny and Uderzo in chronicling the exploits of Asterix and his pals. Asterix and the Missing Scroll is a satire on media and publishing. Caesar's advisor counsels him to cut the chapter on his losses to the indomitable Gauls from his memoirs so that the world will believe that he conquered all Gaul. Caesar does so, but the excised scroll is stolen and finds its way to the Gaulish village.

One of the hallmarks of the Asterix series is the clever puns in the names, and Ferri does well here. He also updates the series a bit with names like Bigdhata, Ipsos and Wifix. Names like Pridanprejudis and Confoundtheirpolitix are less successful, seeming a bit forced and struggling for relevance.

The book has a very neat coda with a tribute to the original authors, which I really liked. ( )

Gallien og Rom, år 50 før Kristus
Julius Cæsar har udgivet sine erindringer og i sidste øjeblik har hans hofsnog og udgiver, Fidus Ficumdicus, overtalt ham til at udelade kapitel 24 (XXIV), hvor han fortæller om sine nederlag til de ukuelige gallere i Armorica. Skrivestuens tjenende ånder (nu om dage kaldt Ghost Writers) bliver sat i husarrest og alle kopier af kapitlet bliver beslaglagt. En enkelt af skriverne Bigdatha sniger sig dog bort med en kopi alligevel. Cæsars erindringer "Gallerkrigen" bliver en krambodsbasker. Selv i gallerbyen når nyheden frem via avisbudet Pneumatix, som bringer avisen til Algoritmix, der giver nyheden videre til Asterix og Obelix. Desværre læser Algoritmix også horoskopet op. Senilix tror at han skal "gøre store erobringer". Asterix og Obelix skal "undgå konflikter og skær ned på vildsvin". Høvding Majestix' hustru Godemine skal "vække sin indre høvding til live".
I Rom bliver skriveren pågrebet, men først efter at have givet papyrusrullen videre til nyhedskolportøren Avispolemix. Ficumdicus gætter at denne vil skynde sig hjem til Gallien og forsøger at opsnappe ham på vejen. Avispolemix har dog allerede mødt Obelix og kommer til at tale med Majestix og Miraculix. De er ikke helt så begejstrede for kuppet som Avispolemix er. Han mener at de har fået Urna Jacobi (dvs jackpot) med den og at det vil få hele imperiet til at vakle. En romersk patrulje har fulgt efter og må pr brevdue rapportere at papyrus-rullen er nået ind bag gallerbyens porte. Høvding Majestix's hustru Godemine sætter lus i skindpelsen og vil have noget gjort ved sagen. Det er vigtigt at gallernes efterkommere får den rigtige historie. Miraculix bliver af Asterix og Obelix ekskorteret ud til druiden Archaeopterix, så han kan memorere papyrus-rullen. Det bliver overhørt af et par romerske soldater, men da de slipper deres brevduer løs, får Asterix øje på dem og de får nogle bank. De forskellige duer når frem og Ficumdicus bliver bleg af skræk og iler mod gallerbyen. Asterix, Obelix og Miraculix kommer frem til Nyskoven, hvor druiden Klimafix hilser dem velkommen. Miraculix får ham også til at gøre de to romere en bjørnetjeneste. Sent om natten forsøger de forslåede romere at finde ly i en stendysse, men der sover de tre gallere allerede, så de får flere bank.
I landsbyen venter Avispolemix spændt på de tres hjemkomst og imens får han forevist nogle af Trubadurix' instrumenter, en gagakord, en brølofon og en horribylium. De tre gallere når frem til Archeopterix, men denne forveksler Miraculix med Minimalix, Mnemoteknix og flere andre navne. Ikke så betryggende!
Ficumdicus sender en dresseret ørn ind over gallerbyen og udgiver sig for Cæsar. Avispolemix vover sig ud på tur udenfor gallerbyen og bliver taget til fange. Ficumdicus forsøger at bytte ham for papyrus-rullen, men det går helt i fisk. Trubadurix blæser i blæsofonen, hvilket hidkalder Asterix, Obelix og Miraculix uden opsættende effekt. Majestix frigør de strategiske reserver af trylledrik og Obelix får at vide at horoskopet var forkert. Tilsammen udløser det en masse bank til romerne.
Julius Cæsar i egen høje person dukker op og lader sin vrede lyne mod Ficumdicus. Majestix benytter lejligheden til at give Cæsar sit eget skriv om gallerkrigen og foreslår at det kan komme med som rettelsesark.
En stor festbanket bliver afholdt og Miraculix sover sødeligt efter at have banket romere. I tidens fylde fortælles historien videre fra Archeopterix til hans afløser, osv, indtil det en dag kommer et par nutidige folk for øre. Rene Goscinny og Albert Uderzo. I alt fald hvis man skal tro historien her.

Glimrende album, der lever op til mange af de gamle albums. Der er et gennemgående tema med brevduer. Og de sædvanlige skøre navne som fx Vadefonofis. ( )

The second outing for the Ferri/Conrad partnership sees Julius Caeser write his famous book about the Gallic Wars! However, he's told to edit out the part about the Village of Indomitable Gauls and instead claim he conquered all of Gaul...certain parties are keen to preserve the real story. Typical shennanigans ensue, complete with long-suffering legionaries, arguments between villagers, pirates, violence, puns, irony and irreverence. The whimsy is dialled down compared even to its immediate predecessor, let alone the extravagances of Uderzo's authorial efforts but for me the best Asterix books take our heroes to a foreign country and take the mick out of the cultural stereo-types. Here the Gauls never leave, well, Gaul. Still, it's an at least averagely good entry in the series and that average is pretty high quality! ( )

I actually found this book a bit slow and tedious. It appears to be a more recent one with a copyright date of 2015. There weren't many really funny jokes in it.

A charming Asterix adventure, this new album is a worthy addition to the long-running French comic series. It addresses a question which is crucial for the authenticity of the series: why did Julius Caesar never mention in his histories his failure to defeat the Gauls of Asterix's village? Asterix and the Missing Scroll answers that he chose to cover it up in a whitewash of history – not so much history being written by the victors as a case of history being written by those who can write. The authors, writer Jean-Yves Ferri and illustrator Didier Conrad, spruce up this compelling theme with clear contemporary references to Julian Assange and the Wikileaks scandal that might go over the heads of young readers, but will be recognisable to older children (and nostalgic adults picking up the new Asterix out of curiosity – guilty as charged).

I wasn't quite sure where Ferri and Conrad wanted to take this theme – the plot loses its way in the shouting match at the end, with the message rather muddled – but the attempt to provide more than just a nuts-and-bolts story like their previous offering, the limited Asterix and the Picts, is very welcome. This is a bona fide, intelligent Asterix adventure that does the legacy of Goscinny and Uderzo proud (the two creators are even referenced in a nice little homage at the very end of the book). Whilst the odd joke does fall flat (there's a running joke about grass that I don't get, though it's probably staring me in the face), I was very impressed by Asterix and the Missing Scroll. Contrary to how I felt after reading Picts, I'm now looking forward to the next Ferri/Conrad addition to this eternal series. ( )
