Video Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S1aQJHZEN0 Borrowing elements from Beauty and the Beast, East of the Moon etc, and flavored with decorative elements from the Indian subcontinent, we have a despised princess promised love and power and taken away to a magical kingdom. But something is not what it seems (of course) and what she learns is as dangerous as not knowing. Sometimes told like a YA and sometimes like a fairy tale, the flow and weight are unbalanced, just barely serviceable. An Indian princess is set up by her father as a sacrifice to save the kingdom from war, but at the last minute she is saved by a mysterious suitor who takes her away to another realm entirely. He remains cagey about who he is and insists that she only need wait until the new moon before learning everything, including why she belongs as queen by his side. She…doesn’t wait, though. Because of course she doesn’t. And so there’s trouble. This one is touted as a retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth, which is why I chose it, but I’m not convinced that there aren’t similar tales in India as well, so I’m hesitant to say that’s actually the case. At any rate, it’s a good little story, nicely told. I am trying to reread books I did not finish before and I’m afraid I still did not like this one. The kingdom Maya ends up in was beautifully described and had the atmosphere of a romantic dream. I also liked the way fate had different strings and outcomes. A boy can grow up in two ways and a sword can be used for more than killing. This dreamlike kingdom is full of secrets and riddles, but after half of the book I didn’t find them intriguing anymore. I just wanted some form of plot or answers to follow. The women in Maya's household hate her because of a prophecy and her father doesn't take her seriously because she's a girl, which felt boring and annoying. Then she falls in love at first sight with a mysterious prince, and I truly cannot think of any aspect I liked about their romance? He offers to make her his equal queen, but being equals is the bare minimum? The only relationship I liked was between Maya and her sister Gauri. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
