Title: The Daughters of Jim Farrell
Author: Sylvia Bambola
Pages: 286
Year: 2015
Publisher: Heritage Publishing Horse
My rating is 5 stars.
This is the first novel by Sylvia Bambola I have read and I simply couldn’t put it down; I had to stay up and finish the book! The action takes place in a coal mining town during the late 1800s. Three grown sisters, led mainly by Kate, had to find out who really killed a coworker of their father’s. This is the coworker that Jim Farrell was incidentally hung for after a trial. Kate’s other two sisters wanted her to leave it alone and just move forward. Her mother wanted her to leave things be as well, but Kate just had to find the truth.
Virginia was not seeking a beau; however, she wanted to own a newspaper. Charlotte was already engaged to a young man in the higher part of society even though Charlotte’s family lost their standing in the community after her father was found guilty and executed. Kate finally got her sisters to agree to hire a Pinkerton agent. When Joshua came to town, he stayed at the Farrell family boarding house which they began in order to make a living when their social status slid down.
Now from here on out you will read of a magnificent tale of what the Pinkerton agent begins to uncover and how more trials come to the Farrell family. Yet even with all their troubles, this family gives compassion and aid to the widows and children in the coal town. Throughout the novel we learn where each woman’s heart is with the Lord, and how romance seems to bloom for the sisters from unlikely places. The central theme of the book is that nothing is more important than being close to the Lord. For some that means letting go of vengeance and leaving it with the Lord.
I plan on reading the other novels written by Sylvia as they are faith-centered with captivating story lines. The book was part mystery, romance, importance of seeking the truth no matter the cost and appreciating how the Lord gave each person talent. The sisters each had talents and learned how to appreciate who they were and how they used their gifts.
This was a great book and one certainly worth losing a little sleep to finish!

The Daughters of Jim Farrell by Sylvia Bambola takes the reader into the world of Pennsylvania Coal country in 1873. It tells the story of the three daughters of a man Jim Farrell who want to clear their Father's name, a Father who had been wrongly, they were sure, of murder and hung. It tells of the struggles of his family trying to survive by making their home a boarding house and all the while living with the shame that comes with their Father's hanging. Kate, who is bitter from what has happened, decides to talk her sisters into finding out what really happened and clearing their Father's name. Trouble starts for the whole family when the investigating starts. Will they be able to find the truth before more people get hurt? What will they find and will it help at all?

This is a very fast moving, good story of love, family, faith and forgiveness. It also is one of finding strength through your Faith when things are tough. The struggles of the coal miners and the greed of the railroad for this time period plays an important part and adds to the story in a big way.

I enjoyed the book. I loved how the characters all grew in their faith, maturity, and strength. It was an eye opening book to the conditions found in coal country in 1873, I found the song Tennessee Ernie Ford use to sing "I owe my soul to the company store" come to mind when reading this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a book with history, faith, love wrapped in a good plot.

At one time the Farrell's were a very wealthy family with impeccable standing with the high society. They were well respected and invited to all social gathers. That changed one day when Jim Farrell was hanged for murder. Their life turned upside down and the daughters were determined to prove their father was innocent. After much discussion they hire a Pinkerton agent to prove their father's innocence. Will this detective be able to prove that their father was hanged for a crime he did not commit?

As each of the three sisters are introduced into the story , we find each one with their own turmoil of dealing with their fall from high society and the death of their beloved father. The town would whisper as they saw the family and made the sisters feel unwanted and perhaps a bit ashamed. The author does a great job of describing the coal mines. The men and even young boys worked hard in the mines for little pay. The work was extremely dangerous and a disaster hits the mine one day. Who will perish in this accident?

What secrets will be uncovered as the agent continues his investigation? As you meet each sister in the story you come to enjoy their different personalities and total commitment to clearing their father's name. I loved getting to know the sisters and read as they each discover their hopes and dreams. The author has written a very good mystery that had me guessing till the end. I will be looking for more books from this author to read and enjoy her great stories that come to life.

I received a copy of this book from The BookClub Network for an honest review. ( )

I started this story skeptical, but ended as a fan. At first I only liked one of the three sisters (Virginia), but over time I came to understand and appreciate the emotions and actions of all of them. The story follows three sisters and their mother as they deal with the after effects of their father's hanging. Believed by all (but the family) to have killed another man, he was sentenced to death. Angered and wanting vengeance, the eldest sister Kate decides to hire a Pinkerton to investigate the murder and clear her father's name. The more they discover, the deeper they fear the secret lies. Set in the heart of coal country in the late 1800s, this story also sheds light on the plight of poor miners and their families and the absolute authority that the bosses had over their workers. Eye opening and full of historical intrigue, this story is sure to reach a wide variety of audiences. It's historical, full of romance and mystery, and considered to be inspirational or Christian. A surprisingly good read.

I received this book for free from Book Crash in return for my honest, unbiased opinion. ( )

The Daughters of Jim Farrell takes readers to the tiny town of Sweet Air, PA during the spring of 1873. We meet the Farrell family who were once a prominent family in good social standing in the town, but reduced to turning their stately home into a boarding house in order to survive when Jim Farrell was hanged for murder! Thing is his oldest daughter Kate decides she is going to hire a Pinkerton agent to prove her fathers innocence and talks her two younger sisters Virginia and Charlotte into contributing to the cause. Just what will they uncover when the investigation begins?

The Daughters of Jim Farrell was a page turning mystery that was really so much more. The author paints an amazing portrait of the coal camps that existed during that time, while also including the miners and their families. The Farrell sisters were as different as day and night. Kate was stubborn and wanted answers, Virginia was interested in starting her own newspaper and Charlotte just wanted to marry her boyfriend, a man from a prominent family in town. Each sister finds love in their own way and while I enjoyed the story with each sister and the man that fate seemed to entwine them with it had to be the story between Patrick and Virginia that really touched a chord in me. I found myself cheering this couple on,I could just imagine this gentle giant of a man, and the way that he felt for Virginia. and my heart truly broke at the end of their story, I even shed a few tears. I will admit the author left me with high hopes for Virginia and I am keeping my fingers crossed that we might get another story revolving around these sisters! ( )
