Why can't I drive the car?Because you are too small to drive. Why can't I jump on the chair?Because chairs are for sitting. These seemingly innocent questions, the kind usually addressed by a child to a parent, take on a crazy new twist as the illustrations reveal that the questions are being addressed to a child - by her dog! The understated text beautifully sets off the grandiose ambitions of this little dog with BIG ideas. And his little girl owner patiently answers all his questions, until finally, she has to tell it like it is:But why do I have to eat off the floor?Because you're a DOG, Murphy!Quirky, charming and absolutely hilarious, Why Do I Have to Eat Off the Floor? will appeal to children, adults - and all those dog owners whose dogs just don't understand that they're not people!Ages 3+… (plus d'informations)

This is a heartwarming book for parents, children, and dog lovers. It gives a new perspective on the way dogs are treated in our homes and how much we treat them like family. ( )

Ages 1 and Up. In “Why Do I Have to Eat off the Floor?” Murphy the dog asks a series of questions (“Why can’t I sleep in your bed?”) and gets a series of simple responses (“Because you have your own bed”) meant to mimic the questions and answers between children and parents. The book is illustrated in a cartoony style with a pastel color palate. Although it is a cute concept, the book isn’t very engaging and the words have no rhythm to them at all. Not recommended. ( )

Booklist, April, 1, 2007, page 57:

"Kids can relate to questions like 'Why can't I?' and answers like 'Because.'. In this offbeat, canine-centric take, Murphy, a floppy-eared beagle, wonders about many things....Dog lovers will appreciate cute, expressive, ever-curious Murphy..."
