When I lived in Japan I loved this character just from seeing him on t-shirts and bags etc. I watched some of the dubbed cartoons (and the not very good CGI film more recently) but this is the first time I really read any of the comics. They are quite sweet and naive in the main, with Astro Boy (I still think of him as Mighty Atom) an idealistic boy robot who wants everyone to be happy. Enjoyable read. ( )

I really enjoyed this. I've only read Tezuka's Buddha before this and like that as well. In my opinion, Astro Boy is possibly the most iconic character to come from Japanese anime/manga. When you read these stories you can see way too. I mean he is a cute and likable character, but at the same time you can see that Tezuka loves to tell stories.

There is a lot seriousness with humor as well. Most of the chapters stat with Tezuka breaking the fourth wall tell readers history about Astro Boy and also sharing some culture of Japan. I think today most of the information would be over the target audience's heads, like talking abut the Vietnam war, but I feel like Dark Horse put these out ore for older audiences around my age. However, this manga was written for kids, unlike the Buddha series I read previously.

The only downside to this Omnibus series is the font size. I do agree with most people saying it's too small, but site like Amazon gave this book a one star review just for that reason. I think that's a little unfair. It's not that hard to read the fount and I have bad eye site. ( )

I love Astro Boy. This book does feel a little dated but that not a big deal. The point is the spirit of the stories. They present to the reader a character who might always wins but he always tries. That spirit is summed up in a single phrase that go, go, go Astro Boy. ( )
