He'd give his life to protect the president's son. But he never expected to risk his heart. Growing up gay in the White House hasn't been easy for Rafael Castillo. Codenamed "Valor" by the Secret Service, Rafa feels anything but brave as he hides in the closet and tries to stay below the radar in his last year of college. His father's presidency is almost over, and he just needs to stick to his carefully crafted plan. Once his family's out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef. It's definitely not part of Rafa's plan to get a new Secret Service agent who's a walking wet dream, but he's made it this long keeping his desires to himself. Besides, it's not like Shane Kendrick would even look at him twice if it wasn't his job. Shane's worked his way up through the Secret Service ranks, and while protecting the president's shy, boring son isn't his dream White House assignment, it's an easy enough task since no one pays Rafa much attention. He discovers there's a vibrant young man beneath the timid public shell, and while he knows Rafa has a crush on him, he assures himself it's harmless. Shane's never had room for romance in his life, and he'd certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane's mission. But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line? Contains mature themes.… (plus d'informations)

4 stars.
Rafa is the son of the president. He is also in the closet, not planning on coming out until his father's term in office is over, which is in 6 months or so. His Secret Service team is switched out, and Rafa meets Shane for the first time. As Shane spends more time with Rafa in a professional capacity, he realizes that Rafa is not his public image. Although Shane appreciates the Rafa he is coming to know, he has a plan for his career, and a crushing man in the closet many years his junior is not part of it. Something about Rafa speaks to Shane, though, and as the two get to know one another more personally, feelings start to grow.
I liked the build in relationship between Shane and Rafa. I felt as though they actually got to know one another, not just skated by on surface attractions. I didn't really like the impropriety of Shane and Rafa forming an attachment and acting on it, but I did feel as though they were made for each other, so I could (mostly) overlook it. All in all, I probably enjoyed this a little bit more this time around. ( )

This story touches on many details about living in the White House. It's a hard like on a teen. Here we have Rafa trying to find himself while staying closeted while being pushed to live as his overbearing mother wants. I can understand why the other Castillo kids ran far from the White House once they were of age. I like Rafa but he could have used a little more backbone. The poor guy is so hungry for friendship and approval that he reaches out to his Secret Service agent, Shane. This put Shane in an awkward situation but the two work things out. Well written with just enough angst for me, the story was a complex read. ( )

Age gap stories always kind of weird me out but I do really like the authors writing and the way she tells a story. This one wasn’t quite as good as the last book I read by her (the pirate one) but I still enjoyed listening to this one. ( )

I received a copy of this book from the author via IndiGo Marketing & Design in exchange for an honest review

After reading this book, I have to say that I think the cover is spot on and wonderful! I think it very accurately shows the age difference and I can see the likeness of the described characters in the book. I really like the cover.

Rafael Castillo, or Rafa, is the youngest son of the current (fictional) President of the United States. He is 21, a virgin, and still in college, but home for his summer break. He's quiet, tends to keep by himself, and never gets into trouble.

Shane Kendrick is a 39 year old Secret Service Agent assigned to Rafa's detail. He has been working for years to get to the White House, and has always remained professional. Meeting Rafa throws him for a loop because he is immediately attracted, and he can't quite figure out how to stay away when he knows he should. He struggles with the age difference as well as his duty to remain uninvolved.

There is drama when Rafa and his family discuss his sexuality, there is a kidnapping, and there is a long road to finding an HEA for these two. Keira Andrews did a great job with this book and these characters. I had concerns while reading it about how they would overcome their challenges, but I was glad to see it all work out. I do wish there was a little epilogue at the end to show me that their happiness lasted.

This was an interesting take between the President's son (still living in the White House) and a Secret Service Agent assigned to protect him. It was very cool to consider some of the background of what it must be like to live in the White House with people watching every move you make, especially when trying to hide something as significant as being gay. This is quite a hard book for me to rate and review. It was one of those books that I just couldn't really engage with. I had no trouble putting it down, which isn't really a good sign. I've been trying to think what it is that didn't work for me, and I have come to the conclusion that it's not one thing, but a combination of a few things.

First of all, I struggled with Rafa. He is supposed to be 21/22, in his last year of college. But he read much younger. And way to naive in my opinion for someone who has grown up in the public spotlight. And Shane, while almost 40 also just didn't "feel" right. Nothing I can pinpoint, but something felt a little off in the beginning.

I do believe Shane's character improved as the story continued, but by that stage it was almost too late to truly grab me.

There's nothing really wrong with the story, I simply believe it's a case of "it's not you, it's me". ( )

Many, many thanks to Anne-Marie, Becky, Jules, Mary, and Rachel for their fantastic beta reading and friendship. And a big thank you to Annabeth Albert, who inspired me to dust off this story idea and bring it to life.

Someday when people ask what it was like growing up gay in the White House, Rafael Castillo will tell them it sucked donkey balls.
