 Wulf’s The Invention of Nature shines its spotlight on that arc of environmental knowledge linking Humboldt’s late eighteenth century to our twenty-first. If he was ever forgotten in the English-speaking world, then this biography places him once again where he belongs, with Charles Darwin and James Cook, Ernest Shackleton and David Attenborough, Rachel Carson and Jane Goodall, the great natural historians and scientific adventurers. ... It doesn’t matter that Wulf’s The Invention of Nature is a bit breathless in keeping up with its dazzling hero, and a bit coy about his relationships, because above all the book is intelligent, an optimistic history, well researched, well written, and an ecological cri de coeur. Despite some reiteration, her book is readable, thoughtful and widely researched, and informed by German sources richer than the English canon. > L’INVENTION DE LA NATURE, Par Andrea Wulf - Éditions Noir sur Blanc, 28€. — Il était en son temps l’homme le plus célèbre du monde (… juste après Napoléon), aujourd’hui presque oublié alors que ses découvertes sont fondamentales.
Incroyable personnage que cet Alexander von Humboldt ! Né en 1769, fils de famille que sa mère destinait à occuper de hautes fonctions administratives. Doué d’une curiosité insatiable et atteint de bougeotte, il rêvait d’un autre destin et l’accomplit.
Naturaliste, géographe, aventurier, il est l’un des scientifiques les plus importants du siècle des Lumières. Porté par sa passion, et au mépris des dangers, il part en expédition dans la forêt tropicale, arpente la cordillère des Andes, en escalade les plus haut volcans. Tout l’intéresse, il veut voir, connaître, comprendre et faire partager ce qu’il découvre.
Les cinq années passées en Amérique du sud bouleversent sa vision du monde et de la science. À une époque où la pensée dominante affirme que « le monde est fait pour l’homme » et que la nature doit être domestiquée, Humboldt comprend que « tout entre en interaction, tout est réciproque » et constate les effets catastrophiques de la déforestation - sur le climat notamment. Dès lors, précurseur de l’écologie, il n’aura de cesse d’avertir les hommes des dangers qu’ils courent à vouloir dominer la nature au mépris de ses lois.
Sa route croise celle de Goethe, de Jefferson, ses idées influencent Darwin, Simon Bolivar. Sa vie se lit comme un incroyable roman d’aventures. On s’étonne de son intrépidité, de sa persévérance, et plus encore de son intelligence, de son éclectisme et de sa sensibilité. Génial visionnaire, il comprend avant tout le monde que, pour être appréhendée dans toute sa complexité et pouvoir progresser, la science du vivant exige de conjuguer raison et émotion. Amoureux de la nature, il évite l’écueil de l’angélisme. Von Humboldt est à (re)découvrir. C’est le plus pertinent des écologistes !
