Preschool, possibly -- nice depiction of pride in your work, and doing things well, no matter how humble. Good read-aloud, and a gentle introduction to Katrina/ good disaster recovery book. ( )

A whimsical tale of Cornelius Washington, a sanitation worker in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina strikes the city. This inspiring story and accompanying illustrations show the difference one person can make in a community. Author’s Note, Pronunciation Guide.

Marvelous Cornelius: Hurricane Katrina and the Spirit of New Orleans is a wonderful children's book that features sanitation worker Cornelius. Cornelius loves his city and his job, and he spreads cheer wherever he goes. One day, the city he loves so much is stricken by Hurricane Katrina. Devastated, but optimistic of a full recovery, Cornelius sets out to clean up the city. Along the way, he encounters members of his community who join in the effort to restore New Orleans. This book features wonderful and colorful illustrations. The spirit of New Orleans and the sense of community is captured in every page. ( )

Through his hard work and positive attitude had a tremendous impact on countless individuals who lived and came to visit New Orleans. ( )

I love this. Maybe I am just projecting my deep love for my hometown of New Orleans, but I believe this story is a perfect rendition of what everyone felt during and after Hurricane Katrina. My absolute favorite line from this book, that nearly brought a tear to my eye, is "Cornelius rose. He dried his eyes, for his spirit and his will were waterproof." I love the use of native New Orleans language throughout this book. The illustrations are joyful. Cornelius perfectly captures the spirit of the city. ( )
