I read 'If I Had a Hammer' in Home Improvement: Undead Edition, edited by Charlaine Harris and Toni L. P. Kelner. Sookie Stackhouse's old friends, Tara and JB du Rone, are modifying their bungalow so that their baby twins, Robbie and Sara, will have the sun room for their bedroom (it's bigger than the tiny second bedroom). I personally would have arranged for the bedroom closet to be open on both sides because eventually the twins are going to be too old to share a bedroom, but no one's thinking that far down the road. A grisly discovery is made in said closet, which changes the house for the worse. Sookie knows some details about an old tragedy that the others don't because she got them from her grandmother who got them her mother. Sookie, her shapeshifter boss Sam, and the du Rones' 18-year-old tri-racial babysitter, Quiana Wong get to solve the mystery/problem. (I gather that Quiana's late parents never married or that she was given her Chinese & African-American mother's surname because Quiana's late father, Coop Woods, is described as all redneck.) Notes:

a. If you've never heard the old song Sookie is singing, you may hear it on YouTube.

b. Quiana's parents were killed when she was 16. We are told how it happened.

c. We're told about some baby knickknacks the du Rones were given.

d. J. B. is described as looking like a fair-haired version of actor Jason Lewis.

e. There's a reference to [the original] Ghostbusters. If you want to watch the cartoon series inspired by the movie, be sure to look for 'The Real Ghostbusters'. 'The Ghostbusters' cartoon just used the name. Oh, and if you're an H. P. Lovecraft fan, one of the 'Real Ghostbusters' episodes was 'The Collect Call of Cathulhu'. If you're an Agatha Christie fan, the 'Boo-Dunit' episode featured mystery writer Agatha Grisley.)

f. The du Rone house has pictures similar to the work of Thomas Kinkade.

g. 'Ghost Hunters' is a TV show on the Syfy [formerly Scifi] Channel ('Sci-fi' was the non-science fiction fan abbreviation. When I was young, true fans knew the proper abbreviation was 'sf,' unless you were around when the genre was scientifiction in the 1920s or so, in which case it was 'stf'.)
