However, I have the same problem with this book as its predecessor: the first 300 pages or so are very slow paced with endless discussion of minute details of family feuds and political scheming. Things get properly giong only sometime after that. I almost gave up on it prior to the second half of the book. The author's later series (the Moirin trilogy) didn't have this problem and I enjoyed it much more. ( ) Kushiel's Chosen is the second book in Phedre's trilogy. Phedre is the friend of Terre d'Ange's queen and has found a place in society. She has Jocelin and her cavaliers, but she fears Melisande is not finished with her schemes, so she sets off on a fabulous journey to disrupt those plans and save her country. The pacing is excellent, a virtual roller-coaster of events that has Phedre in danger while on a clock to fulfill her mission. Things often seem lost, but she perseveres to accomplish her goals while experiencing loss and sorrow. It's a story masterpiece in a complex world with extraordinary, well-defined characters. Phedre has her faults, but loyalty and determination are not part of them. The side characters all have their roles and only add to the story. Melisande is one of the best villains in fantasy, manipulating people and events in a style that makes others look like amateurs. The romance between Phedre and Jocelin hits some rough patches as each struggles to deal with their conflicting beliefs. This is a terrific book with a world I want to revisit again and again. Love it. Want more! Jacqueline Carey really knows how to write a book in wich you dissapear into her world and only emerge when you have read the last word. The sweet sorrow, the agony, the love, the betrayal it is all there and more. Some books are made to be worshipped. This series is full of those books. 2018 Reread: 2018 Reread: This totally happened for some friends (all the way up through book two for now), and I remain forever in the charms and arms of Jaqueline Carey's type of writing. I love her vocabulary and lyricism, and they I'm just stolen away forever by her fully flushed cultures, religions, politics, histories, and how they all overlap. Nothing about this series ages in the years since purchasing it on each first publication dates or reread since. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Mighty Kushiel, of rod and wealLate of the brazen portalsWith blood-tipp'd dart a wound unhealedPricks the eyen of chosen mortals. The land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassed beauty and grace. The inhabiting race rose from the seed of angels and men, and they live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.Phèdre nó Delaunay was sold into indentured servitude as a child. Her bond was purchased by a nobleman, the first to recognize that she is one pricked by Kushiel's Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one. He trained Phèdre in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber-and, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. When she stumbled upon a plot that threatened the very foundations of her homeland, she gave up almost everything she held dear to save it. She survived, and lived to have others tell her story, and if they embellished the tale with fabric of mythical splendor, they weren't far off the mark. The hands of the gods weigh heavily upon Phèdre's brow, and they are not finished with her. While the young queen who sits upon the throne is well loved by the people, there are those who believe another should wear the crown...and those who escaped the wrath of the mighty are not yet done with their schemes for power and revenge.
