This is what I was waiting for when Season 6 of the TV show ended. Compendium Three covers issues 97-144, which go from the last ~2 episodes of Season 6 up to who knows where. With how different the series has been from the comic, I'm looking forward to being surprised and annoyed in all new ways as my expectations are dashed by the writers. Rick continues to oscillate wildly between unhinged psycho-killer and alleged Greatest Leader the World has Ever Seen. Negan turns out to just be The Governor dialled up to 11. Far more interesting is the latter parts where we focus more on Carl and we get new antagonists, the Whisperers. They are an intriguing psychological response to the Zombie Apocalypse, which seems to have been going on for a while now. This is a decent read. There are some good ideas in here that I just feel are under-executed for some reason. Other ideas come dangerously close to jumping the shark. The compendium feels split in half with two different "arcs " separated by a pretty sizable time gap. Perhaps those who read issue to issue found it less problematic, but reading the compendium straight through it feels as if Kirkman got bored with part of the story and just didn't have the patience required for a follow through to connect things more neatly. The art, however, is still really good. Some of the two page spreads are breathtaking! I love the style even if Carl's wardrobe change is suspect. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

From Chapter Twenty-Two: A New Beginning, I didn't really like the story. The abrupt change in the story was too jarring. I actually thought it was going to be some kind of lame 'dream sequence' thing at first, and then was a little disappointed that it wasn't. I've checked out the next compendium, but I may not read it all if the storyline doesn't get better. ( )
