 Widely sourced and compellingly written, The Wilderness offers a rich and entertaining mix of gossip and political scheming as it follows one of the largest candidate fields in modern history through the early stages of the 2016 U.S. presidential race.  The book ends as it begins, with Republicans wandering the wilderness in search of a message and a prophet to win a national election. Coppins does not presume to proffer any clarity on how that might be achieved -- or through whom -- but he provides some lively and worthy reading for Americans who just can't get enough of one of the stranger major-party nomination fights in recent history. Solid reportage though without much flair; one wishes Christopher Hitchens were still around to bring these revelations to life.
