In the second century B.C., on the remote northwestern frontier of China, one tribe of mounted archers overran the land of another, initiating a nomad migration which threw the whole of Central Asia into turmoil and led to the fall of a Greek kingdom in northern Afghanistan. Laszlo Torday has painstakingly pieced together the movements and identity of the tribes involved, using evidence from Chinese and Greek sources, scattered coins, and surviving names and legends.
