The author plans long novels based on characters, plots, structure, mind mapping, and conclusions. If you are new to writing there are nuggets of information that will open new methods to explore. Quense describes computer programs that he uses to track ideas, plots, characters, research, and other bits and pieces writers tend to accumulate. The book format needs to be improved to allow better flow of the materials. Some margins, indentations, and lack of white space make it appear cluttered and disorganized. ( ) This book goes step by step how to build a book from the ground up. There are tips on how to develop the plot, characters, and emotional buildup. There are many diagrams to better picture the ideas being expressed in the book. I am someone that like structure when doing anything and this book sets that structure. "Planning a Novel, Script or Memoir" by Hank Quense A book is the end result of its author's journey. For some it has been an arduous task akin to a trip with many hazards and side issues. Others may have had smooth sailing, start to finish. Readers generally judge the end result caring little (or nothing) about the process). Traditional publishing has spawned editorial staffs who offer criticism and help to aspiring writers. Current technology opens the field to the independent author whose mantra is "I'll do it myself." Hank Quense here details his method of getting a book from idea to reality. Aspiring writers who read it might be inspired to dedicate their book to him after absorbing dicta such as "The plot is what moves the story forward and gives the characters something to do, a job, in other words. Without a plot the characters are unemployed." Although I have no plans to write a book I was fascinated by its author (and greatly enjoyed the glimpses of his fictional output, especially "Tales from Gundarland" in the book's appendix).
