Often viewed as a fantasist, Goya was, in fact, a man of the Enlightenment, a moralist who looked with a sardonic eye at the follies, views, and superstitions of his time. This book explores his methods of working and the development of his methods of working and the development of his ideas from drawing to print throughout his career as a printmaker. Over 250 prints and drawings drawn from twenty-six important public and private collections are fully reproduced and discussed. Several impressions of the same print are often shown in different stages, while the drawings have been selected on the basis of their relation to the evolution of the design or imagery of a print. Two of Goya's major series, the Desastres and the Disparates, never published during his lifetime, are represented by an unusually large number of working proofs which were printed by or for the artist and which reveal his original intentions. - Dust jacket.
